I hadn't heard that he was ill. Any idea of cause of death?

The family didn't release that information.
Very sad. I remember when I was a kid my parents wouldn't let me stay up and watch the show. To adult/PG rated I guess. I did watch the later shows though when I got older. Funny funny man.
The closer I get to 79 the younger it seems.

That makes me so sad. I always loved him. I know he had a heart condition, that may have been the cause.
I just heard on the news a couple of days ago that he sometimes sent David Letterman jokes for his show. It was the first time I had heard anything about him in a long time.
Be kind. Everyone is fighting their own secret battles.

Too bad about Johnny. The last of a true American Icon.
As for age, I hope to be like Mom, she's 81 this year and still walks 3 miles a day on the beach and has a 148 bowling average.

I saw him at The Valley Forge Music Fair a small theatre in the round in Devon, PA about 25 years ago.
Four of us went & we were so excited to be lucky enough to get tickets.
It was a good show & very much like his monolog & very, very funny.
I just saw a recent picture in a tabloid, he was overweight & his face looked bloated like he might be on cortizone. If I can find it & get a decent picture I will post it.
This news is so sad.

Johnny was a GREAT guy and will be sadly missed. I doubt that anyone else will ever come along to fill his shoes.

[b[gina[/b] Me too, there wasn't a bad seat in the place & all were close enough to the stage where you could really see the performers clearly.
Here is that recent picture I mentioned.
It's not the Johnny we all remember.

what poor taste! why would anyone want to post a picture of a man obviously not well? wouldn't it be a lot nicer to just let people remember him the way he was? nothing like morbid public curiousity. small wonder that celebs want their privacy.

I watched The Tonight Show as long as he was the emcee. Haven't watched it or anything similar since.
Thanks, Ltray for your nice picture.
McJane, why did you post the one you did? It's awful. Completely unnecessary and tasteless.
Insulting at the very least.
I guess you must read those tabloids...

This is a pic in 1995--not from a tabloid.
Copied it correctly--not showing up. Look up news on yahoo. Look for slideshow.

Will he be missed?
Of course he will be missed as a person, but as a figure in entertainment? Not so much now. He devoted 30+ years entertaining us and I believe we all agree, no one was better over that period of time. But after he left the tonight show, he retired from all TV appearances. So we really haven't had him in nearly 13 years. I for one wished he would have made the occasional appearance just to see him again. But I also must respect the fact, when he retired, he totally retired and became very private. In a way, a real nice way to live out the rest of his life.

I'm sincerely sorry I offended you ccharmed & ltray, it was not intentional. I thought it was ironic that a photo just happened to show up this week in the Globe. It's rare that he appears in public & I wanted to show the picture, that's all.
I had no idea he was ill, I consider myself to be one of his biggest fans & as I said earlier, even went to see him in person.
Lucy I'm an avid reader I read everything even "those" tabloids. Shame on me, I'm such a bad person, better I pretend I don't read them like some others do, but that would make me a hypocrite & that's worse.
ltray How on Earth did you remember that blue glass on my desk, you amaze me.
It's a lamp & a very old one too.
OK, here is the picture of the blue glass lamp & I'll dump the Globe since I'm finished with it, but let me keep the Enquirer.

McJane, I was not offended but I do hospice work occasionally and I know that everyone wants to be remembered as they were in their prime.
Unless you die at 105 from having too much sex, no one wants to be remembered as being old, or sick.
And thanks for the pic of the lamp. I LOVE it! I'll give you $5 for it
BTW, I think it was made by Central Glass company. Very Nice.

I didn't get to see Johnny Carson much because I was too young to say up that late. However, when I was old enough I enjoyed his show. My favorite shows were the featured the zoo animals.

ltray, I admire you for working in a hospice.
I'm in the medical profession too, I'm an RN with an AD & seriously thinking about going for my BS degree. I worked in oncology for a few years & I know how difficult is can be to lose a patient.
I didn't think him as looking old, but as he should at his age. It was obvious he was on cortisons because of his weight gain. But, you are right one wants to be rembered as looking well & that is how we will remember him.
About the lamp, could be Central Glass Co.
What I can tell you is that I know the lamp is over 70 years old, how much over, I don't know. On the socket it says...
250 v 50 cp
patented
H.T.P. CO
I will post a picture of the socket & that might help to identify it. It has no marks anywhere on the glass. It is a pretty little thing, the glass part being 7" tall, I've always loved it mostly because of the color.
Now about selling it to you or twig, both offering very generous amounts, you guys would sell it on eBay & then I would just have to buy it back again.

McJane, your lamp is a modified (made electric) oil lamp and probably dates from around 1890 to 1910. I have a similar lamp made by Central glass. Mine still has the original burner and chimney which is blue.
