I started including this in my auctions about a month ago. I just got stuck for the 2nd time when a buyer paid me based on the zip code in my listing.
When I wrapped and weighed the package the postage was over and also I had packaging materials to buy. They also decided to ask me for insurance after they had paid me by paypal.

Do you really think including this option in listings gives more bids in the long run??

I am debating whether or not to drop this option.

I think it gives the buyer some assurance that he's not going to get gouged on shipping. Your error was not figuring on cost and weight of packaging material in determining shipping cost. In my calculator I mention that insurance is required on all purchases over $10.00, but not included in the postage calculator figure. Also, I don't take PP, so customer has to wait for me to send invoice.

Are you using one of the calculators??

In direct response to your question, I found that it made a big difference in the number of people that paid without having to be invoiced and the number of people that actually just went forward and bought instead of them having time to think about it and/or find one cheaper somewhere else.

As for the one that wants insurance after the fact, I usually do it myself and at the same time request a second payment figured for the insurance and the PP fees. (If they don't pay it, I eat it.) You also have the option of refunding the payment and sending an invoice with the corrected shipping amount including insurance.

I am using the calculated shipping in VD - I enter the weight. If I refunded the paypal payment and then sent an invoice, he would have felt cheated. He said he bid on my item based on the shipping and felt that is all he should pay.
Yes max, it was my error as I weighed the item and did not put it in a box. I just added 2 lbs for the box but it was still short.

I think I had more bids when I put the calculated shipping in my auctions, but hate to come up short.
