I told this very difficult buyer to go ahead and return something via 1st class mail and I would pay the return postage.

She just emailed me and said she mailed it priority with delivery confirmation.

Am I obligated (or would you) refund her for her priority/dc mail when she was told to mail it back 1st class?

What I do is make it very clear to them, because honestly most don't know the difference between priority, first class, etc. She probably was talked into this by the postal clerk. What I do is tell them what class to ship, and tell them (for example with media) that I will cover $1.42 which is what they will pay if they ship via media mail. I also tell them that if they decided to ship another class of mail (priority or express) I will only cover the cost that I have agreed to. That way, there is zero chance of miscommunication unless they simply don't read. Since I started giving a dollar amount that I will use, I haven't had a single problem.

As far as this situation, you already said you have a very difficult buyer. If it were me, I would just reimburse the extra $3 or so and be done with this person permanently. Sometimes, it is worth a few bucks even though you are right to not deal with a problem.

That is an excellent suggestion. Give them the specific dollar amount you will allow. This is twice now...I've specically said 1st class and a buyer has sent it back priority.

Why are you paying for postage?
Every transaction I've done, the seller doesn't refund the postage, I pay the shipping/postage to return it.
If that was the case, the seller would include a return postage paid label.

ewora doesn't say why the item is being returned but I'm curious Salgal, lets say you sell something and when the bidder receives the item it turns out to be defective in some way without any fault of thier own, why should they have to pay for return shipping? Don't you think the seller should be responsible for the shipping?

For me, it depends. If it is something that is defective, then I pay for postage. If it is an issue of the buyer not happy about it, I will accept a return but they pay postage both ways.

Didn't say the reason for the return; I assumed it was not liked, not defective. if it's defective of course you pay for postage. if it's something they don't like, then they should pay; but that should be explained in the returns policy.

When it's my fault, I send a self addressed, stamped envelope or box to the buyer.

If the buyer simply changes their mind, then it's up to them to pay all shipping fees and get the item back to me in it's original condition.

My TOS states very clearly: "Be advised, in case of returns, I do not refund shipping charges." If the buyers don't or can't read my TOS, thats TS.

If you specificly told her to mail it back 1st class, I would not pay the priority shipping cost. If she is being difficult about splitting the cost, you can always refuse the shipment.
