I sold a vintage mink coat and described all defects that I could see when it was in my hands. Got an email today saying the mink is dry and has cracked in 2 places and she wants to return it since it is not as described.
What do I do?

Here is my listing......

Here is a BEAUTIFUL MINK COAT! Deep Dark Brown Mink that buttons down the front with 3 buttons. The sleeves have "pretend" cuffs made from the fur with no buttons--overlapping the mink and sewn together to look like cuffs. There are two Nice pleated pockets in front. This coat is in Fabulous Vintage condition with gentle rubbing on the elbows(looks like someone may have patched it about 1 inch on one elbow. There are two 6" slits on each side of the bottom of the coat. The inside is nearly perfect with MCC initials embroidered in the lining. I found a small rubbing in the lining toward the bottom of the coat, also. I disclose ALL flaws as I see them. This coat is a BEAUTIFUL Vintage MINK Coat. Chest measures 36". Back of neck to bottom of coat measures 30". Underarm to wrist is 17". Size Small. I ship Priority. Buyer pays shipping determined by weight and zipcode, unless it exceeds 7.70--then buyer would pay 7.70 Priority flat rate fee. I try my best to save you in shipping.

I don't know, but what I do know is that you mention vintage at least 2 times. I have Mom's vintage mink stole and the 1st thing the fur guy asked was - is it split. One could hope that someone buying a vintage fur, in 'as is' condition would ask before bidding. Good luck. Louise

It may have been that "Fabulous Vintage condition " that got you into trouble.

The first question anyone buying old furs should ask or consider is if the pelts are dried out. That happens when the fur has not been properly taken car of.

If the pelts were dry, then no, the coat was not in "Fabulous" condition.

This one is a toss up. She should have asked, but you should not have said fabulous.

What does you instinct tell you to do? You are the one who has to live with this. Guess only you can decide.

If it were me, I would refund her money and consider it a lesson learned in selling furs.

When selling something I am not very knowledgeable about, I usually include a disclaimer such as "I don't know much about this, please ask questions before bidding."

It has worked for me so far.

Most people that ware or buy fur know that fur dries up with age and then splits, but maybe she is not familiar with fur so she went by your description, and you didn't mention that the fur was dried and could possibly split from age. You may not have known or noticed how dried the fur was.

About returning her money:
I think you should consider a refund since you didn't mention that the fur was dried out, She can not ware the coat with the splits, so it might save you a lot of time and trouble if you think of giving her a refund.

I agree that a refund would be appropriate in this case. I had a learning experience like this when I tried to sell a First Edition book to a collector with a price clipped dj. The book was in fine condition from my viewpoint but I learned from the buyer that price clipped dustjackets are not acceptable.

I learned not to say "great, fabulous, mint, beautiful, new etc." unless I'm ready to offer a refund on it. I stay away from over describing anything. I'd rather have a very happy bidder than one that's unhappy.

Just IMHO

I always refund, even if they just don't like it. Just can't stand someone not being happy with their purchase. I was just hoping you guys would tell me not to so I wouldn't have to give that money back. Thanks!
Hang on to that coat. Minks are not going for great prices this year. Do some research and figure out the best time of year to sell it.
