You know - it's one thing to swipe someone elses pics but why would you deny it when busted? I know my pics, I should, I not only take them but then I spend a good deal of time editing them in photoshop to place the items on a custom digital background with every item placed at the same angle with the same drop shadow on each so that my store has a distinct uniform look that coincides with my website.

I imagine my surprise then when I notice another seller using one of my pics in their auction, check their other items and it turns out they are using 3 others as well. No big deal, relatively new seller, so I contacted them to let them know it was a no-no and asks them not to use my pics in any future auction and this idiot tries to tell me that these are their pics and that they took them and that the background is a fabric (um..no sweety - it really isn't) and that the shadow is natural.

Why is it that these people think that everyone else is as stupid as they are?

Auctions are closing tonight so there is really no point. I bookmarked them as a seller so that I can check back and let them know that it was a Vero violation which could get them suspended.

Reminds me of a PS who used my pics in her auction. I wrote to tell her that I would appreciate it if she would stop using my pics. She wrote back basically saying "who the hell are you? I took those pics myself." I told her "I am the seller whose WATERMARK is across the front of your so-called pictures." Never heard back after that!

We spend alot of our precious time and energy taking pictures and writing informative descrptions. We have a right to complain to Ebay about someone stealing either one from us. Especially when they have our watermark!

I would make sure I had proof that the pics are mine and then I'd report them for picture stealing.

I want to congratulate you fenix for taking the approach that you did. You seemed to be calm and cool about it. They're not many that would do what you did. Maybe you weren't calm when you saw them but you appeared to be that in here.

We have a post like this every few weeks but I have a questions - how in the world do you find this out?? Seems like a lot of work to check up on everyone selling like items (but then all mine are different).
I also take a lot of time taking and editing my photo but someone could have a whole website with my photos and I wouldn't know it??

Ladyjewels, every now and then I research an item to see how the competition is doing. That is how I discovered someone who had stolen my photos. I didn't really care and simply considered it a compliment.

Libra - I just don't see the point in getting really upset. It doesn't effect them at all and all it accomplishes is ruining my day.

Lady - In this case.. I did a generic key word check because I wanted to see if my store was showing up down in the corner and right there on the first page was one of my pics as someone elses gallery. I jumped out and bit me. Like I said - I make the effort to make my images distinctive.... it worked

What about a big fat watermark?

A watermark on an auction photo seems like overkill to me.

Helen -- A watermark may be overkill to you, but when you spend hours on your images making them look as pleasing to the eye as possible, it is anything but overkill. Especially when it helps to deter others from stealing your hard work. Personally, I don't want anybody but me profitting from my hard work.

ladyjewels -- I list almost exclusively in one category. As such, I am always checking out the latest listings. I need to keep up with what everybody else is doing so that I'm not listing the same things as everyone else. It's alot of work, but definitely pays off.

Well, different strokes for different folks. I enjoy photography too...in fact, more than selling. I just don't care if someone occasionally has a need to use one of my auction photographs. That's such a trivial concern from my viewpoint.

I never LOOK -- why upset Ralphie over THAT?

As he so philosophically notes: "Donna sweat the small S...."

Helen - in this case, all of my photos have the same look and they do stand out on the gallery listings. It's obvious that they are all generated by the same person so I would rather other sellers not utilize my pics since I would rather not have my products associated with any deficiencies they have as a seller.

I too felt flattered if someone thought a photo of mine was good enough to "leverage" into their auction. I too thought that watermarking was overkill.

Until ... I got several image hosting charges on my Vendio account from photo-poaching sellers who were too lazy to copy the image! It was a PITA to get them removed one by one even though it wasn't a lot of money.

So now, I add a watermark to all my images. I still don't really care if someone wants to use them. I just want them to put in enough effort that it doesn't cost ME money!!

Put a copyright statement or your user ID or store name on your pictures to prevent people from using them.

I happened upon a site I think I was looking for military pins etc. but this guy said straight out, "Most of these pictures are from Ebay."

I thought that was kind of funny But it did make me wonder how many other off sites are doing it too?

Photoshop Elements has a pretty fast watermarking tool.
It's just part of the 123 of editing pix.

I don't check competition, because I don't have a regular bunch of stuff, but if I put the kind of work Bizzy puts into her auctions, heck yea.

Classic:

Tis sad, but TRUE!

When Ralphie was a young & foolish pup, he posed "au-naturale" for a "glamour" phototog from "Playdog", who claims the negs were stolen by a felonious feline and spread (without any ROYALITIES to Ralph, mind ya) all over the place!

Sounded like a load of BULL-BUSH to me-&-Ralphie, but, whatcha gonna do??
