My husband has a coin collection he wants me to sell for him. I know absolutely nothing about coins, but he says he does, but he knows nothing about selling on eBay. We make a great combination.

Is there anything special I need to know so that I don't get into any trouble. He has some old silver dollars, half dollars and he seems to think he can get more on eBay than he does at a coin dealer. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks What about images. Do you do both sides of the coin? Do I do close ups of any part of the coin.

Have him read the descriptions of several closed auctions that brought high prices. Have him pay special attention to how the sellers described the condition. If he is familiar with the terms and codes they use, it shouldn't take him long to work up a good description. He could write the descriptions and you could do the images and listing. I personally would scan both sides of each coin and use the scans instead of photos. Also, you want to remember that in shipping, most insurance does not cover currency, so you will need to get used to quoting Registered Mail rates for shipping.

Taking really good pictures (of both sides) is good advice because a minimal difference in condition means a huge difference in value for some coins. Are these rare or common? Are they circulated or uncirculated? Common circulated coins, you won't have much of a problem. If you have something that is less common or uncirculated, then collectors will be more picky. Also, knowing something about coin grades helps, a grade of good really means bad, a great of excellent is just so-so, and uncirculated (or proof) is the best condition coin.

He purchased these coins quite a while ago either at shows or from dealers and they are still in the paper holders. He has some rare Silver dollars that when he took them to a dealer he didn't buy them because they were worth more than he would pay. Now, there is an honest dealer. Some silver half dollars also. I really don't want to sell them because I know nothing about them but he wantd to sell them and give the money to our grandchildren before we go to the promised land. We are not that old.

I will do some research on them, maybe buy a magazine and see what will happen. The worse thing is that no one will bid on them or I screw up the descriptions where the buyers gets a good one. Oh well, easy come easy go.

<<but he wantd to sell them and give the money to our grandchildren before we go to the promised land.>> Buy him some vitamins, minerals and supplements instead and convince him the promised land is WAY in the future. If he still insists on selling them, contact the manager of the bank you do business with. He will know every coin collector in the county and can hook you up with an honest one who can assist you and give you a few pointers.

First do as others have stated and research closed auctions.

Then take pictures. DO NOT USE A SCANNED IMAGE. Coins do not scan well and usually show up very crusty and dark. Take good digital photos, but be sure to be at a slight angle so the flash doesn't reflect directly back at you.

As I understand it from a previous thread here, eBay has changed some of the rules for selling coins. I'd read them carefully. You might also want to read the discussion board on coins at eBay.
