of do not ship to countries? I know it's been discussed here before, but I never bothered to write them down. I know, I'm bad.

Neglus - any suggestions on what to do and not do as far as packaging, labeling, etc. for something going to Italy?
I have a buyer who expects to make payment when he's back home in Italy tomorrow and so will have to ship his leather jewelry box to him either Saturday/Monday.
Figured I'd ask if you saw a trend or knew something you could pass on based on your experiences with the Italian P.O.
Any guidance/help would be much appreciated.

I'm about to cut off Canada. Lousy postal service is one thing and I can deal with it but the self righteous buyers are driving me straight up a wall. I mean come on, how can the entire civilized world know that their customs and postal systems absolutely bite and they somehow remain oblivious and get pissy when something takes more than a week to arrive.

A huge box was held for 3 extra weeks while the postmaster was skiing! No I can't prove that but the client waiting for the item said it was his BEST guess. Lucy that list about Italy is most interesting what do they want you to ship $$$$ ????

I really don't know WHAT happened with my packages to Italy, but they never made it to the customers. My bet is they got hung up in customs. But who the heck in customs would want a bunch of crochet patterns??!!!

Actually, Classic, no. She never contacted me until 3 months after the sale. I e-mailed her a copy of my postal receipt to prove that I had, in fact, sent it to her. It was sent airmail so she would have had it in a week or so. She never asked for a refund and I didn't offer. Had she contacted me sooner, I would have offered to refund her money.

postal receipt? you mean the slim white paper they give back to you that shows which country you sent it to and the price on it?.Just wondering what I'd do in case I run into a problem.

Classic -- Yes, the thin white receipt. It showed the date it was sent as well as where I sent to (Italy). It proved to the customer that I did, in fact, send it. I scanned it and then e-mailed it to her.

Wayne - I only have sent postcards to Italy so I am afraid I probably can't help with packages.
The problem I have had is that the postal workers steal the items (I assume). One time I received a registered letter from Italy (this is the way most buyers send cash payment). "registered" mail is locked at the post office and is never supposed to be subject to "light fingered" employees. I signed for the letter - opened it up - EMPTY except for the note saying what items were being paid for. It looked like new glue (shiny) had been applied to the envelope flap. I contacted the buyer and he resent the $ with no problems. Likewise, I have had several postcards not make it to their destination - just assumed they were stolen.
If you send a package registed to Italy, the most you can insure it for it $40. I have had several postcards sell in the $60 range so have decided to send those cards registered and hope for the best with the others.

In the past I had so many problems with foreign buyers that I quite selling outside the USA. We are just beginning to “test” the foreign market again with specific items only to a limited number of countries. We started with Japan, because there is a company here in the US, which is an intermediary for Japanese buyers, and that mean I only have to ship the item to CA, and they assume responsibility for it, and take it from there to delivery in Japan.
We have also opened up the Canadian market again, our past experience was very bad, but we will see. Our local post office (very rural) lost so much base income when we TOTALLY switched from the USPS to UPS, that they are now begging for our business and making some concessions, so we will see how the foreign sales go via the USPS.
We have shipped only once to Italy, and it went smoothly. HOWEVER, I purchased wholesale items direct from Italy all of the time, without a hitch – except the one time they shipped FedEx, and that was a nightmare. I then gave our wholesaler specific instructions, that on my items to NEVER EVER ship FedEx again, that I wanted everything shipped to me UPS. We have had never ending problems with items shipped to us via FedEx. We have a “brick & Mortar” store, at the intersection of two state highways and FedEx claims half of the time they cannot find it! Normally, we have to call their office, where we find our order has been sitting in their office for a week or two, and raise heck to get them to deliver!
We just had a worse experience with DHL – on an item we ordered. First, the DHL driver delivered it to the wrong house, with an address nothing like ours. DHL then made him pick it up and re-deliver. I suppose he got mad, and instead of delivering it to our house, which an idiot can’t miss, it faces a main county highway, and is 10,000 square feet (kind of hard to miss), the DHL driver, goes right by our house, down a dirt road, and redelivers it to a trailer house on a dirt road! After endless calls to the local and national DHL, we found where the package was, and my husband went to the trailer and picked it up himself! The people in the trailer had already opened the package, although it was not addressed to them, and it seems they intended to keep it, had my husband not shown up to ask for it.
On our posts we are using this statement, the same that we use on our web sites:

I had an antique sewing machine held in Canadian customs for weeks, and it was going to a Canadian Government Official, and he was livid – not with me, but with the Canadian customs department.
ToMwiii, Regarding BidPay I read on their site that they only issue money orders for the UK. Are you saying that they issued a money order on an Italian credit card?

Ever try to look up contact information on someone from Germany?
No more Deutsch buyers for me. Bidder no-paid on 1200 dollars worth of Indian War collectibles, got NARU'D THREE times on successive ID's and for all I know is STILL getting back onto EBay, thanks to German privacy laws. He
still has some of MY PHOTOS posted on his .de American Antiques website, offering the items for sale. I don't know what he's actually going to provide to his buyers, as I never shipped him the items.
