Someone posted earlier about receiving multiple PayPal payments for the same item from the same buyer. Well this is happening with a lot of frequency lately and must be some kind of glitch - but here is an example of a ditzy buyer:

Received payments from buyer Karen on 2/24 and on 2/27. I refunded the 2/27 one saying "Duplicate payment - one will do. Thanks for your purchase and prompt payment".

Then what do I find when processing payment yetsterday? ANOTHER payment from Karen - of course I don't remember the earlier one because I had over 100 payments to process so this requires a "history" look up (eating MY time) on PayPal and a check of Vendio to make sure the item was shipped since I can't find the card (DUH it was shipped on 3/1)..ok well, it happens (had 2 other buyers with the same thing yesterday)...

So I refund Karen's THIRD payment with the note: "This is the third payment I haver received for this item which was sent to you on March 1. Please check your records.I refunded the second pymt 3/1. Regards"

I got an email from Karen, apologizing and thanking me for the refund and saying what a ditz I must think she is...I almost responded with a "You're welcome. It must be a glitch because I had 2 other buyers do the same thing" when I hear the click of a new email coming in....Instant Payment notification from PP and guess who it was from?? KAREN!!!! God I hope I don't get the fourth one from the other 2 too!

WHAT IS GOING ON!???

There is definitely more of this going on. After a while I am just going to start keeping any payments 3rd or more if the situation doesn't get any better. These payments are obviously being made by people who don't care about the amounts of money involved.

JMO but....

It's true what they say, what goes around comes around.

If It were me, I would keep trying to refund ALL the payments that weren't rightfully mine.

If you don't, you may run into problems. Not only with PayPal but somewhere down the line in your life.

It's funny how some things can come back and bite you in the ass.

I was kidding - OF COURSE I am going to refund the payment - I guess I should have been more clear about it - it's just the irony of her paying IMMEDIATELY after apologizing about it that I was posting about. Sorry to mislead!

I think what is happening is a result of Ebay's wonderful changes to the MY EBAY page. If the buyer pays directly through paypal or through the WBN email, then checkout isn't completed through MY EBAY and it shows the item as not being paid. So guess what ditzy buyer does? Yep, she pays again without checking her paypal records.

I have a feeling it is a combination of the payment not being registered as ppaid by ebay and your bidder opting to pay for all items at once.

If it's really "common" sense, why do so few people actually have it?

I think I have figured this out. Wasn't there a day where there was announcement about the PP data not updating?

I think for some reason the buyer's first payment did not get fed back from PP to ebay to show "paid" status on the "My ebay" report (both buyer's and seller's). Buyer pays again - THIS time the status is updated. I refund the latest payment - now the item shows "unpaid" again on my ebay. Buyer pays again..I refund and so on.... I refunded this fourth payment today and lo and behold "my ebay" shows the item unpaid!! It also said "send invoice". I sent an invoice telling buyer not to pay (the last thing I want is a fifth payment!)and then I manually updated to "paid" status. Hope that fixes it! I think in the future I will refund the first payment and not the second to avoid all this.

Well I haven't had any problems with mulitple payments, but I do go back to My Ebay after making paments and hit the 'mark as paid' link next to the item if it hasn't updated. I usually don't have any problems remembering if I paid for some thing, though.

On a related note, I've frequently had buyers request that I "update" the unpaid items eBay shows for them. Is there any way that I, as seller, can do that?

No - it turns out that the status info you put on your "my ebay" does not go to buyer's ebay. I finally told her to mark it as paid herself on her ebay (there is a little arrow with a pull-down menu to do that). I won't be getting a fifth paymet...I HOPE!
