I've been seeing some referrals floating around for a service called greenzap which is supposed to be competition for Paypal. The service doesn't start until June, 2005 but you can pre-register starting now and get $25 in your account for pre-registering.

I went ahead and signed up since they didn't ask for any personal info outside of name, address, and e-mail - no financial but now I'm wondering. I haven't sold much on ebay lately but I want to get back into it and wanted to keep up to date on what is going on.

Has anyone heard if this site is legit? Is this going to be a true Paypal competitor or is it some kind of scam? It seems to be starting out awfully small and right now is concentrating on referrals ($5 for each direct referral) and a complicated system for those referred by your referrals.

The site is www.greenzap.com

Any insight from any of you would be welcome. I'm curious what y'all think.

Debbie

OTOH: if ya SEARCH "greenzap," ya end up with:

http://www.scams.net/showthread.php?t=76&highlight=greenzap

$25 to sign-up PLUS $5 per sucker(er, I mean, co-member) ya sign-up...

NO "about us" page? NO info I can determine about anybody there...

Yes, I'm sure they will put PayPal out-of-biz in approximately 4,500,000 years (give or take a kabillion?)

For what it is worth the Paypal competitor, Greenzap, has starting publishing some additional info on how the program is going to work. It looks like the fee is going to be $1.00 per transaction.

Here's the link for the faqs

http://www.greenzapworks.com/index.php/gzap/faqs/

I'm still waiting to see if it's legit or not.

Wow,
If it is legite, the fee is much more reasonable than PayPal. My average fee on PayPal is over $5.00.
Please keep us informed.

WOW!

What did you end up getting for that 45?

Apparently this is the owner:
http://www.glenngarnes.com/
or at least the uber shill.

If this works, we'll have to revisit cold-fusion.

I'm going to give him a call and suggest he do an interview with us for the show.

Best,
Michael

This is the latest correspondence I received from GreenZap - supposedly they are upgrading their servers.

With over 5 million hits to our site in just 3 days, the GreenZap community has zapped around the world in record time!

Because you are doing such a fantastic job expanding your GreenZap community, it has become necessary for us to upgrade our IT systems. We are currently experiencing a system overload- nearly 10 Megabits of inbound site traffic to be exact and that's a ton!! This is an unexpected issue and we are currently working with Dell and Cisco to resolve the overload. We anticipate the equipment to be up and running in full capacity by the beginning of next week.

We appreciate your hard work and dedication to GreenZap!! Keep up the good work!

Have a Zappy Day!!

Still waiting to see if this is legit.

Debbie

10 megabit doesnt really sound like much..

I guess he means per second.

even then, thats not something most servers cant handle. hmm.

but yeah their site doesnt even work, and its being spread like mad too what with the $25 bonus.

here's another site with some info: http://www.egreenzap.com/

and a PDF from greenzap that they host since greenzap's own server can't handle the load.

http://www.egreenzap.com/assets/pdf/GreenZapOverview.pdf

well if the site works, it doesnt seem to be much harm in signing up unless they ask for sensitive and silly personal info.

personally when u do a whois on the greenzap domain, their whois info is registered under Proxy Inc, which is used for those that want to keep themselves in private and protect their privacy when they run sites that may have controversial issues, or people that have reasons to worry about their privacy (then again we all should have reasons)

If the fee is fixed at $1 per transaction, then it might be worth a try for higher priced payments.

Yes do keep us informed - I think Paypal could use a run for "OUR" money.
And if they offer some real Seller's protection - sign me up

greenzap.com seems to be down for the last couple of days.

Sounds like a good marketing idea. PayPal got millions to sign up by offering $5 to sign upand $5 for each referral.

OK, I'll put my 2 cents in. I heard or read recently (can't remember which~senior moment) that JP Morgan is starting up an internet payment site similar to Paypal.
Has anyone heard about this?

I was wrong about Glenn Garnes..he's a marketer not the owner.
I went ahead and interviewed him and he hasn't spoken with the owner who he identified as Alex Sonkin.
I asked him to please put me in touch with Mr. Sonkin...we'll see.
He said Mr. Sonkin was well connected with banks, etc....but really, the whole conversation underscored that this is a typical MLM scheme, long on outrageous promises and very, very short on specifics.

Caveat Emptor...

I spoke with the CEO with the company and will be interviewing him next week for the show.

Financial background..claims to have Visa as a major supporter among others..We'll see.
I'll concentrate on the security of the transactions and of the site in the interview.

They took the site down, admitting that is was a mistake not to have more concrete info...

I hope the pricing structure will give paypal some competition.

I've been receiving e-mails fairly regularly from the GreenZap site. They were down for over a week while they were upgrading serves but when they came back up I noticed they have added some additional info to the site - a Q&A section and I noticed now when you signed up they had some terms and conditions.

Something interesting is that it sounds like the free $25 you get for signing up must be spent - it can't be withdrawn so I wonder when the site opens if that will create demand from buyers that want to spend their free $25?

The way I understand it once the free $25 has been spent the person who receives it can then withdraw it.

I'd expect good demand from people wanting to spend their $25.

I think the $1 fee makes it competitive for payment of over $10, but for payments under $10 PayPal costs less for the receiver.

PP will crush this new competitor just as ebay has crucshed all other payment and auction sites who dared challenge them.

Ebay is still the juggernaut, the behemoth, the 800 lb. gorilla, the alpha and omega.

Or eBay will buy it, not promote it, drive it into the mud, and then discountinue it.

Or an unholy alliance between AOL and Chase Manhattan, or Google and Wells Fargo could buy it and kick Paypal's butt out of the sandbox.

Debbie.....what you are doing seems more than what you innocently call "shameless promoting". It smells of just outright shilling and makes me wonder how much you are getting paid to do what you do? You do do it well.
.
.
.In the meantime I would encourage all to not go to this website. Too much uncertainty, and possible scam. As much as I'd like to see competition for Paypal and Ebay it's not worth the risk....right now. Time will tell....but so far even Ralphie the pooch is smart enough to smell a possible scam.
