This is a recent Garage Sale find. It's ALVIN - BEIDERHASE which was Alvin Silver Company in the late 1800's and early 1900. It's silverplate. Does anyone know what kind of bowl this is? It almost looks like a food mold? It's 5 1/2 inches across and shallow.

Don't know what it's used for, but it sure is purdy!

Is that a fish of some sort at the top? Or, do I need new bifocals?

Thanks - it's silver plate but is lovely. I wish it was sterling.
It looks a bit like a fish w/o a head or tail. So I would say it isn't a fish.

Probably not a food mold, shallow as it is.

It's probably a nut dish or something like that - I was thinking maybe a butter mold because of the detail?? I don't know how butter molds really work and I guess they are normally copper or pewter anyway.
thanks

ladyjewels butter molds are wood back in those days.

What about a finger bowl.

That's a good thought - did they make them divided. Knowing the Victorians - they probably did!!!

It's got a distinct sea motif, with waves and scales, so I'm guessing it's for some seafood purpose.

It's a divided candy/nut (or what have you) dish in the rococo style.

They used to have Bone plates didn't they? If your fish had bones in it you could put them on a different plate. Just a thought.
