...or do they just hope buyers are?

It never ceases to amaze me how many sellers include some type of text in their PayPal preferred auctions that states that they are not responsible for lost or broken items if the buyer does not purchase insurance or that shipping is non-refundable on returns if item is found to be different than described.

Hey people... if the item is lost or broken or significantly not as described... PayPal really does not care what your opinion on the matter is. They are granting the refund. Not only that, but they are granting a FULL refund. The only thing those types of statements accomplish is making you look silly (to put it nicely).

If you want people to pay insurance - build the price into your shipping costs.

BTW - the reason I did this little rant is because at least a half dozen of these that I have seen today are Vendio sellers.

Did paypal start instituting that 'not as described clause'? I always thought before they did not entertain that at all on the buyers behalf? I bumped into a vendio seller (there are alot of them! I wonder where they are in comparision to andale and the other bigger ones?) but this seller started off the auction with the please dont bid assult.... and also gave instructions about CC's and having a different account to accept them. I'd have thought as much as thats been written about on these boards...starting out with please dont bid if you are stuff....but then again, I imagine many are not interested in the boards, and just want to do their auctions and their own thing.

I have to disagree with you on the postage thing (except the not as described part - I agree with that). I just returned two items I bought from suppliers that were received broken. Two different suppliers. I got a credit for the return but NOT for the postage I paid to return the items. They don't credit you for that.

sellers dont have to refund shipping both ways,or one way, mail order companies dont do that just because the color looks different or size does not fit.

I received two items that were SIGNFICANTLY not as described and Paypal did not give me the time of day. Had to do a chargeback on my cc before the seller would agree that I could return them and get my money back. This was just about two weeks ago.

"...or do they just hope buyers are?"

fenix; u b rite! this is the other half of "stupid."

annnnnnnnnnd, you said: "They are granting the refund." excuse me, but you would b even more correct, if you had added: "FULL REFUND."
-----------------
"They don't credit you for that."

while not trying to start a debate, paypal will tell you this, "read my lips," its the "full amt.", is what they issue...no allowance is made for postage...they are bound by law to issue their client the credit, and that being a FULL CREDIT. IF YOU CHARGE 129.99 VIA ECHECK, CREATE A COMPLAINT, AND PAYPAL ISSUES AGAINST THE SELLER, 79.99. so, there are 2 distinctly different scenarios here... all i know, is two days ago i used an example of my "misfortune"...the auction reads 79.99, plus s/h/insurance..customer claimed "not received or not as advertised." paypal c/svc explains that they simply issue a full credit. what ever the person paid them; they[paypal] refunds that.
d***, i hope this makes sense..

and, in my case, i wasnt even notified; they froze my acct.

Dbl - I've had two chargebacks based on "Not as Described". PayPal required the buyer to return the merchandise at their own cost with delivery confirmation so in one case the refund was granted (Item was as described, buyer just did not understand what was being described), in the other, the person just wanted free merch, they had no desire to return it and so PayPal ended up dropping the dispute.

Cheryl - I didn't say they pay for return postage. I was referring to the sellers that state that if they grant you a refund, they will not be refunding their postage costs. the funny thing is that most of these are ones where the seller has placed the items for sale for pennies on the dollar and then charged a shipping amount that is dollars on the penny.

Vintage - I don't know what to tell you, like I said, I have had PayPal go with the buyer twice. Maybe they just wrote better sob stories.

"Maybe they just wrote better sob stories". Yup! 100% correct! Case by case.

I had NO product returned. They KEPT It! Brand spanking NEW! PP ruled in Favor of the buyer! I lost my money too.

My account was Never frozen but EVERYTIME money came into my account,,, it was taken OUT until the total was reached for the TOTAL pp payment the buyer made.

Fenix, I wish they took my side back when I was a newbie buyer. I guess they evaluate it case by case, or if buyer threatens credit card charge back they move? I dont know. But I know the answer they gave me (and this was a long time ago) was they dont get involved in not as described disputes.

But I thought I read where they were changing that not too long ago? Maybe too many people complained or its always been that way, but since it happened to me as a buyer, I just assumed they dont. hmmph!

What's to prevent the buyer from sending an empty box with a DC label slapped to it back in a PayPal dispute?

I offer refunds even if the item doesn't arrive broken. It's just good customer service. If it arrives broken, they get the original amount they paid for postage back as well. If they just don't like the item, they get a refund for just the item. That policy seems to have worked quite well for me. I have found that the one time I paid for return postage, the buyer sent it back Express. I was pizzed off at the cost of it. Dummy me for not saying they had to send it back the way they got it - First Class. So, I stopped paying that portion of the refund. Sending it back is on them.

If it's a breakable item and they don't want to pay for insurance, it's DSI time and I pay for that.

The sellers that always make me laugh are the ones that state "delivery confirmation is an extra $.55 but it is for YOUR protection". HA HA HA HA

Yeah that is good cuz delivery confirmation doesn't tell you zilch until it arrives there. I use it all the time as a seller, but only to verify that the item was received. Several times buyers have sent me notes that they didn't receive their item when in fact they did. "Oh yes, my husband put it on the table upside down and I didn't see it!"
