Sometimes on "Antiques Roadshow", a person will say they bought a widget for $500 in 1940. The appraiser will say it's now worth $5,000 and the person will think they really made a killing. What I was wondering is if there's a website where you can convert a specific dollar amount from the past to today's value, adjusted for inflation? Just curious...thanks!

http://cgi.money.cnn.com/tools/allowance/allowance_101.html

Thus, those $500 in 1940 are equal to $6762.59 in today's bucks.

I know, it's a tool for figuring how much of an allowance your kid should have today compared to your own $1 per week, but it works for any number.

And that of course doesn't include how much you would have if you deposited those $500 in a compound interest bearing account.

I love that website! It will definitely help with things I bought years ago and have held on to. Like that Beauty and the Beast cookie jar that I thought would be worth $100+ by now. Still selling for what I paid when I use this tool - pd $9.99, selling for $12.50 - inflation adjusted value $12.18 - with ebay fees I'll end up with a loss. Could have been worse though, judging by the other thread...
