I just bought a new canon S2. Everything I have read about it is true -- great camera, and easy basic editing software. I want to be able to feather the edges of my picture and write on them. I am assuming that I need better picture editing software, any suggestions???

I personally am a big fan of PhotoShop Essentials. I have not tried to do what you are suggesting; it might require the full-blown Photoshop (which is IIRC $600).
Feathering is Essentials isn't difficult (you cut with feathering and create a new layer). You can also add text, but did you want to add text on the edges or was that just a somewhat unclear sentence I read? I don't know how much control over text you get in Essentials.
