Anyone ever watch this show? They take two couples to a British Swap Meet, give them each £200 and send their buys to auction the following week. Any profit made at the auction goes to the couple... one problem...I've never seen anyone make a profit.

I watched it when I visited my mom (one of her favorites) and did see them make $ sometimes. I haven't figured out where to find it here in MN cable though..what network is it on?

YES I WATCH IT EVERY MORNING ON BBC CHANNEL. ITS ON TWICE NOW. ALSO WATCH CASH IN ATTIC WHICH THEY ONLY AUCTION STUFF THEY FIND IN ONE PERSON'S HOUSE. MOST OF THE TIME THE EXPERTS ARE WRONG AND USUALLY THE CHEAPER ITEMS NO ONE EXPECTS TURN OUT TO BE A PROFIT MAKER.

I watch Bargain Hunt several times a week.. I do enjoy it... 2 things about it make me laugh,
#1 this business ain't as easy as it looks
#2 the times they listen to their personal expert say I wouldn't if I were you and they do it anyway... and loose!
I do enjoy the guy who hosts the program he has an for the better things to be sure, such as good silver. 2 times I have seen people actually end up ahead of the curve.
Both of these shows have now been copied by HG network in the states.

I wondered how current this show was; it seemed like it was taped before eBay arrived on the scene. Not much chance of excitement (or profit), since they go into what are basically retail environments (shows), buy low-end items (which most dealers won't handle unless they have enough markup to be worthwhile), and then they sell them at what is usually a wholesale market (small regional auction house). Then they get all excited when they make a couple of pounds on an item, ignoring the fact that if they had to pay the auction house commission they still would have lost money.
They would have a better chance trying to sell online for this level of goods.

Neglus - It's on BBC America.
I like Cash in your Closet too. This morning they had pulled £2000 worth of items to take to auction but £500 of it went bust when a painting did not meet reserve. The rest of the items that the "experts" valued at £1500 ended up going for nerarly £4000 ncluding a model car that went for 8 times their estimate.
The one I didn't understand was an earlier episode where the woman needed £2000 to redecorate her kids rooms. £2000 is the equivalent of $3500. What the hell was she going to do to their rooms?

I was at an auction in New York a few weeks ago, and they were filming Cash in the Attic! I know it is going to start airing on HGTV soon, so I guess it's the American version. The guys in it are actually much, much older than they look on TV, I was really surprised.
I was also surprised at how out of sequence they were doing their shots - ie showing the couple bidding on an item when something else was up.
They were looking for people in the New York area, or within 2 hours to participate. I was disappointed - I'm 3 hours away.
I love Bargain Hunt too. Would be fun to see an American version of that as well.

I watch both as well.. and I used to like to watch Eastenders, until they pulled it.
But.. I question when Bargain Hunt was produced too.. the host looks like he's straight from the 60's..

It does look old-fashioned, doesn't it. What is Eastenders?

Come on Mags - you know you want those rainbow eyeglass frames. I bet those and the superglue hair-do just make you weak in your knickers.

LOL Fenix.. not to mention all those rotten teeth that the English men all seem to have! Now, that's a real turn on.. He kind of reminds me of what's his/her name Dame Edna? Ha Ha
Caroline, Eastenders is a British sitcom based on the lives and adventures of the people who live in the square and frequent the neighborhood pub.. lower middle class..it was a hoot..and another that I caught while living abroad was Coronation Street...same idea, different characters..

I think I've actually seen it a few times - we used to catch the daytime Britcoms, as we called them, here and there. I loved them!

I've been watching Bargain Hunt for years. It was on our local PBS station. They used to give a prize to the winning team. They could pick from three items. One was worth 1 pound, one worth 10 pounds, and one worth 100 pounds. Of course, they often picked the 10 pounder... I once saw them get the 100 pounder. Back then, one of the team members became the auctioneer for their items too. Was a lot more fun.
As soon as I got Tivo, I started watching Cash in the attic. It seems obvious that the bidders are just random bidders... Sometimes they have a woman bidding on a rifle or a man bidding on a china flower. I mean, it could happen, but it is not convincing. Great show.

I love both shows. They had a Marathon on Cash a few weeks ago and I watched it for hours.
I used to love all the auction shows on HGTV until they stopped airing them all. Now everything is make over shows.

Fair Warning! Remember the Leslie Hindman show At the Auction on HGTV? I used to get a kick out of that. She filmed many of the episodes at Sloans in DC where I used to go alot. I went to some of the sales that were filmed for the show, but I never saw myself on TV.
