I had Norton Works installed on my old computer. I renewed it on line last March but I didn't care for the Firewall so I did not do that part.
Now I want to put it on my new (to me) computer so I wrote and this is what I got back
"As per our record you have renewed subscription for Norton SystemWorks on 02-MAR-2005 and the order number xxxxxxx. Please note that when you renew your subscription, you are extending your access to our LiveUpdate servers for another year. This renewal is a service, and does not include a new version of the program itself.

Therefore, as you wish to install your Norton product on your new computer, I recommend that you purchase an upgrade from Symantec"

Now what the heck does that mean? I thought this was all transferable?
Is there something free I can install that is just as good?

When my business partner had problems with Norton causing his computer to not shut down he called support only to find out it was in India. He told the man on the other end he wanted to speak to someone in the States. They said he couldn't and he immediately canceled his service. I have SBC/Yahoo and it comes with a protection suite. I'm perfectly happy with it. There are plenty of freebies out there if you do a Google search. I'm not sure which is the best, though.

Not necessarily the problem you had but I had Norton on my computer too. I still have Windows 95 (slow but reliable) and, when I went to renew my subscription, was informed that they no longer offer a Windows 95 service...I no longer have any virus protection but figure that no hacker in their right mind would spend any time at all doing something sinister to "95" since there are probably only 4 of us left.

Ladyjewels, it sounds like they are telling you you only have the subscription service for updates on one computer and thatis the only license for the software they have given you (or that youve purchased?)

WRONG! viruses don't distinguish between operating platforms - if anything, Win95 would be _more_ prone to and easier to hack, etc. than XP, for example. just depends if you value your privacy and the info on your puter...

Unless of course you are running Linux or Mac

The Best Buy guy told me that Nortons 2005 was completely revamped and that you should purchase the new version and not update the old. (cost was actually cheaper)

But I renewed for a year and only used it for 6 months - why do I have to upgrade. Why do I have to buy anything - I just want what I already paid for.
I can always upgrade later???

I once had Norton protection and it seemed to work very well but when I attempted to renew it, it was impossible to find the procedure to do so. I'm no computer expert, but they should make it as easy for you to renew as they possibly could !!! I changed to McAffee with a firewall and I absolutely love it...especially the firewall. Its extremely easy to check for blocked virus and other attacks. During this big "worm scare" the firewall has blocked 12 attempts at entry in the last few days. I wouldnt use anything else if it was free !!

I did not have any problem renewing Norton. One month to the date when it was to expire a little window popped up and informed me of the fact. I had a choice of upgrading or renewing and all I had to do was give them my credit card# and e-mail address. New expiration date now shows when I click on Norton icon and I got confirmation by e-mail from Symantec for my order. Probably should have updated to '05 but cost was more.

1. We have had Norton for years with little to no problems

2. Norton is not the only company, that when you call you get someone in India, there are a number of companies, HP/Compact I think being one of them.

3. Norton way out performs MacAfee, and in fact, McAfee does not run right in a Compact computer and they have special instillation instructions for using with a Compact. We discovered that when we got our first Compact many years ago. We just removed McAfee, and switched to Norton

4. Two of our other programs run a firewall, plus Windows has some type of firewall, we are so walled up it would not be worth the trouble to try to get in our computers.

5. Until you can get things straightened out with Norton, go to http://www.download.com, and see if you can find a FREE or TRIAL firewall to use.

6. You could also try to find one on http://www.twocows.comTWO COWS to use until you get your situation corrected with Norton.

One thing I can say about Norton (IF THE USER KEEPS IT UPDATED) is in all the many years we have run NORTON on 5 computers simultaneously, we have never had a virus, or worm problem.

Best Wishes to You

This is one of the reasons that when I download a program to try out and possibly buy later, I download it and save it to a file before installing it. I copy it to a CD/floppy and document any codes needed to install and any other info I might meed later on.
