I was packing some jewelry and accidentally dropped a glass necklace and a couple of the beads broke off.
The auction isn't over but ends tonight. I wrote the high bidder to let them know I was going to end this and why.
When I tried to end it - ebay wouldn't let me.
I think I understand why but this is ridiculous.
What do I do now?

lady, i know they won't let us cancel an auction that's ending within 12 hours. i think maybe you can still ADD text to the auction, though. what about picking a large-sized font in red and putting something at the top of the item description about what happened and that the item's no longer for sale but, due to eBay's rules, you can't cancel the auction? good luck with it; i'm sure that was a disappointing experience for you.

or...maybe eBay's "live help" could manually cancel the auction for you, once you explain the circumstances?

Ebay live can't cancel it either. I had this happen to me where I needed to end the listing, but couldn't. I was told by PS support to just keep cancelling the bids and explaining why.

Add to auction description stating the problem, and state that you will allow the top bidder to void the transaction.

I can't add anything to it with less than 12 hours to go. I am going to have to hope for the best - I'm afraid. I have written the high bidder and I am waiting to hear.
I would cancel the bids but I have lots of watcher too. Not that that means much but I would hate to cancel the top bidder and have someone else come in a snipe it for less. What if she still wants it. This isn't a fair situation to anyone I'm afraid
Thanks anyway all.

Make a picture in Paint Shop Pro or like program that says Item Broke ,no longer for sale. Please don't bid . Then name it the same name as the picture you have hosted on Vendio...it should show up in the auction

Toasted "Make a picture in Paint Shop Pro or like program that says Item Broke ,no longer for sale. Please don't bid . Then name it the same name as the picture you have hosted on Vendio...it should show up in the auction"
I assume you mean she should delete the picture on VD and upload a new picture with the text on the picture that has the exact same name?
Can you cancel the bids and make it pre-approved bidders only to keep people from bidding? If I were the bidder I'd rather bid on a known flawed piece than one that was told to be broken after the auction ended. Anybody remember the picture frame the buyer was so irate about that broke in packing?
It's your reputation as a seller. If you have a winning bidder then they can leave you ? feedback.

That's a good idea Toast - I'll try that.
I used to add an extra but blank photo in every auction in case there was a problem. That was back in the good old days when everything was going down every other day.

oh oh I've got it!
Cancel the bids and make it pre-approved bidders but don't approve anybody.
(re-)launch the auction with a new photo of the item just like it is.
Swap the picture of the auction that's currently running with one of the same name and put the item number of the NEW auction in the picture with an explanation. You could even do it in word with no picture. You'll still get your watchers but will be totally above board and honest and won't risk a negative feedback.

You assume right glassgrl...just like people do when someone steals there picture and host it straight from the web site. They put all kinds of funny things in the stolen picture place like free over night express shipping on a 100 pound floor cleaner...or "I like to touch myself" with a picture of Michael Jackson grabbing himself or pictures of Monkeys with the text that reads ...this seller steal pictures from other sellers.

I didn't know you couldn't end an item with less than 12 hours to go! Are you sure? You can't cancel all the bids and then do a End My Item early?
Maybe I've just never run in to a situation where there was less than 12 hours left on the auction.

No you can't - I think this is a real flaw in the system. I can understand why ebay wouldn't want to let us do this all the time but hey stuff happens.
We are only talking about a $10.00 necklace and really don't know why so many are watching it.
The lady wrote back and thinks she still wants it.

I'm surprised, but the only reason I can see for this policy is for those who run no reserve auctions and decide their item isn't selling for enough, so they end it.
Also, you can't retract a bid within the last 12 hours - I've had frantic people email me who have put an incorrect bid in ($500 instead of $50). Luckily I've been able to cancel the bid in time - but that could be a real problem as well.
I did have one I didn't catch, poor girl put in $1100 instead of $110. Luckily it only went to $120, but she said she was sweating bullets at the end.
