Not to start a big gas scare or anything but my DH is working the tower today and they just called him and told him that gas is going up 25-35 cents tonight. So he called me and said "quick - go fill up".

stop - got the wrong thread there man.
Marcia - it's the airport control tower here in PC.
It could just be us affected by the Louisiana rigs but then again it could be everywhere.
Wind? It's STILL blowing. Where is that state where the wind blows all the time? It would drive me batty in a day.

Don't you think this is kind of an excuse for the Oil execs to make money out of a situation?
What was that about the president might decide to "tap into the reserves"?
I'm sure they were rubbing their little hands together in glee when Katrina headed for LA.

Of course it is!!
Bush is going to have to release from the reserves. Otherwise gas prices sour, dollar devalues more, president loses even more approval ratings and it all gets taken out on republican candidates during the midterm elections.
On the other hand.. he leaves it alone, I make larger profits and democrats win more seats. hmmmm... what a conundrum.

Gas jumped here from $2.56 to $2.69 in a matter of a couple of hours. I filled up this morning on my way to work before all this happened. I'm so glad I have a mid size sedan and not an SUV or a full-size truck. I couldn't afford to drive either of them. We would have to park them. Our mini van is expensive to fill up but we don't drive it as much as the car since it is smashed in on one side and you can't open the driver's side door. The car is easier to drive and get in and out of.

Our Prius is getting 40-45 mph, sometimes more, and it fills up with 8 gallons. Still, I hate those rising gas prices and agree the oil execs are gleeful. Stock market rose today on the bad news - bad, that is, for all of us commoners.

Fenix,
The United States only has 70 days worth of gas in the reserves. I personally think it should be saved for a real emergency. While prices may pinch a little now, I can envision a point where the situation reaches a serious crisis point. I think the wee bit o' reserves we have should be saved for that.

Rutagbaga - we just lost the source of 25% of our oil for who knows how long so if we don't make that up from reserves we are going to have to be replacing it with market purchased resources at their highest historical price. That would result not just in higher gas prices but in all produce and consumable goods, higher transportation costs, higher manufacturing costs etc. That is the recipe for a recession and we are not yet recovered from the last. Another one coming so soon results in huge dips in the value of the dollar which end up in a spiral higher import costs, lowered stock market value etc.
Crisis points can exist in many forms but do you honestly believe that it is better wait until we reach the finacial crisis point? Wouldn't it be more responsible to AVOID the crisis point that to try to deal with it when we reach it?
Why not use what we have now have now and then negotiate replenishment of those sources with the new Iraqi government when it comes into play from their resources. According to a report I saw this week, Iraqis are currently paying $.05 a gallon for gas.

fenix - I have to agree with you here. Increased prices means a decrease in consumer spending. Things could spiral out of control. As it is, we've cut back on a lot of our spending. We know what our heating bills are going to be this winter. Last winter, in one month it cost us over $500 to heat our home. This winter could be worse yet. To put it into perspective, that's more than our mortgage payment, electric and phone bills combined.
Something needs to be done about this now. It's funny. Last night I was watching the news and the government said that the news was good about the damage done by Kristina. It wasn't as bad as they thought. Now, we're hearing otherwise. Call me cynical, but I'm beginning to wonder how much of this "news" is being brought about by the oil company's need for profit and how much is actual fact.

I wish I could buy gas for $2.52/gallon. The cheapest I have seen lately is $2.91/gallon. I heardon TV the other day that Wisconsin has the highest state tax in the nation at .30 per gallon.

Cheryl - I think part of the problem is that is really is getting worse. Yesterday it looked like New Orleans had dodged a bullet but now the flooding that they expected, but did not happen, the day of the storm is happening now. Levees are breaking, bridges are falling apart and now there is only one way in or out of the city which has rising water levels but no one know where it's coming from to stop it.
I don't think even the oil companies are able to create this one. Areas we saw footage of yesterday with no standing water are now under a foot of water and rising.

gaspricewatch.com
gasbuddy.com
These really do come in handy.

As much as I hate WalMart, we do buy gas at Sam's Club. We saved 14 cents a gallon the other day by going there. It's a little bit out of the way, but at these prices it's worth the trip.

I may hate shopping at Walmart and may disagree with some of their practices but you have to give a little credit where it is due as well, they were one of the first to step up and donated one million dollars to the Red Cross and I have a feeling you are going to see their trucks right beside the brewery trucks bringing in bottled water and supplies. When it comes to disasters like this, they have an impressive history of lending help where they can.

I KNOW that! But to shop in Sam's you need a Sam's membership card or at least a one day guest card.
To shop at Walmart (ie to buy Gas) you don't need a Sam's card.

Since we do not have any super Walmarts in this area, the gas sold at regular Walmarts if they have a gas station have signs saying Sam's Club. That is why I asked.
