It was born this morning. The tracking forecast is very low confidence at this point. It could wind up anywhere from Key West to Nova Scotia.

Niel...This one is a newborn and is struggleing at the moment to survive. One model shows it dissipating in 48 hours and another shows it gaining hurricane status in 72 hrs. All the others are in between. It's no threat yet, but it bears watching. OTOH, there is a system much further out that is getting a lot of scrutiny. It looks like if certain events transpire at the right times, it could be a blockbuster. Here's a picture of it. The one associated with the strong convection is the one they are worried about.

I've never heard that expression before. Will see what is happening on the noon news. They had some websites in the paper this morning to contact relatives who are missing in N.O. There are about 5 or 6 of them. Do you think I should start a thread with them??

Niel, you know we can go and search it.
But I like sparkz the weatherman's 'channel'
lol!
re: the missing people thing. You could place a link if you want. But I'd imagine if people are looking, they may have found it already, but maybe it's easier if somebody reads here and just thought to click on the link. dunno...

TD14 has strengthened and is now tropical storm Maria. Niel, convection is basically warm moist air from the surface rising and being cooled by cold air aloft which condenses it and returns to earth as precipitation, usually in a violent fashion that produces lightning, thunder and extremely high winds. When it happens over land it produces strong thunderstorms and occasional tornados. Over water, where there is much more warm surface water to feed the process, the results can escalate into stronger storms that can continue to grow in size and strength.

Geez Sparky - you should be a weatherman.
According to the noon news, Maria is heading north for New England. However there is another disturbance out there now.

NHC is predicting this to become a hurricane in the next 36-48 hours. The good news is that at this time, it is not predicted to hit the east coast, although things could change. Meanwhile, out west, this is what we have to contend with. The figure at the top of the map indicates the number of earthquakes we have had in Calif in the last 7 days. The large yellow square at the bottom of the state is a 5.1 that hit yesterday at 6:27 PM near the Salton sea. This one should have rattled Roadsmith a little.

bjboswell...That map illustrates why everyone in California wears rubber sole tennis shoes. Leather sole shoes will cause the fillings in your teeth to shake loose. It's also the reason that sellers of glass and china consider 2 buck chuck to be a necessary business expense

Tropical Storm Maria is now a category one hurricane, and expected to strengthen in the next 48 hours. The good news is that all computer models and forecasts predict that it will go north and not pose a threat to land.

Sanmar...TD13 formed in the Atlantic near Bermuda on 8-28 and was upgraded to Tropical Storm Lee on the 31st. It never had the right environment to pick up much steam and was downgraded to a tropical depression that same day. It finally dissipated on 9-1. Probably the shortest lived storm of the season. It was never a threat to the U.S. coastline so didn't get much fanfare.
