Niel...Roadsmith has a Mavica and sells jewelry. When she gets out of the hospital, which hopefully will be very soon, she can give you all the lowdown on photographing jewelry. I think there are a couple more jewelry sellers who have Mavicas. Maybe one of them will jump in.

also heres a couple of pics of jewelry I took with my Mavica...Cheryl has some outstanding picture of jewelry but I don't know what type of camera she has..maybe she'll come along and tell you

toasted,
Please take this in the spirit in which it is offered: the first photo is first-rate, but the second doesn't work for me. Let me say that jewelry (as others have pointed out to me) is my weakest photo subject, and also that it is hard to tell with a smallish photo, but it looks out-of-focus (or too shallow a depth of field) and the lighting (shadows, lack of sparkle, etc.) don't seem to do the jewelry justice.
Having said all that, this is a thread about cameras (uh, I mean another thread about the Mavica), and unless it reflects a lack of near focus ability on the Mavica, the second photo probably shouldn't be held against the camera.
BTW, what is it about Mavica here? Has Sony planted someone here? FWIW, I happen to really like my Minolta Dimage A2. It's in the shop right now for a dust spec, and I miss it a LOT!

put your jewelry in a styrofoam container and shoot .
you can get a styrofoam tortilla warmer in dollar store for one dollar.
