Hi I am having a serious problem with my computer. All of a sudden I freeze up and or slow down to a crawl. I am having pop ups for the first time. You mention. spybot. Do you have a link to their page.. I am nervous about downloading anything at the moment.I think I may have opened something "bad" for lack of the technical term. In any case what ever is happening is hampering my listing and work ability. Hoping this will clean and clear up what ever the problem is. I ran Norton and it found nothing... HELP all of you smart folks.

glass girl, Thanks so much... I downloaded and ran spybot. It found an astonishing 56 problems. I hope this clears up the problem. I know one of the problems was created when I entered the Publishers Clearing House sweepstakes online NEVER EVER again.... That really was the start of my problems, seems to have grown from there. I hope this software will clean clense and allow me to work. Again my thanks.

Hmmm.... I entered PCH sweepstakes lots of times over the years, but not this year yet (too busy), and I have not encountered any PC problems when entering my info there.

let me know if it doesn't work (BTW you'll wnat to START -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Cleanup also. Then shut down and restart your computer.
If that doesn't work let me know - we'll pull out the big guns
PS PLEASE download THIS and run it also. It keeps you from getting into trouble like this in the first place.

The big gun is this. First - right click on your desktop and create a NEW FOLDER. Rename it whatever you like but download HijackThis into that folder. You can drag and drop it anywhere after we get through. (I have a folder on my desktop that I call UNUSED DESKTOP ITEMS which I store all my stuff in)
http://216.180.233.162/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe
Save it to that folder and then click RUN. Click "Do a sytem scan and save a log file" when the log file comes up in Word Pad click EDIT -> SELECT ALL -> COPY-> and then come back over here and paste your logfile. We'll see what you have running in the background on your computer.

PS your Windows IS current and Up to Date isn't it? Start -> All Programs -> Top of the list should be Windows Update.
(the MAC addicts will be along any second)
Otherwise:

She sure is awesome, knows about & understands everything.
I, on the other hand, understand nothing when it comes to computers. I am happy just to be able to turn one on.

Sorry I didn't pop in earlier. We went to my brother's house to pick up a dog. He's a beauty! Part Shephard, Husky and Collie. He's only 10 months so he's still very feisty. I do say this, he's getting fixed ASAP! He's really fond of me, LOL!

Bjboswell...Thanks for bringing this problem here. It's about time we get another thread started on spyware and get Glassgrl in here on the subject. We all need to keep on out toes. Spyware can put a computer out of business as well as a virus. Keep us updated and let us know what you find.

It's one my brother's friend, John, rescued. The dog was grazed by a car and was hiding in the bushes. John was driving and saw the whole thing. He stopped the car and got the dog. He was all skin and bones and dehydrated. His collar was a tightly tied shoe lace. He showed signs of neglect and abuse. Since my brother already has two dogs, he couldn't keep this one. We saw him tonight and fell in love with him. He's still skinny. We're taking him to the vet this week for shots.
I'll post pics as soon as he settles in.

glassgrl,
one little trick i've used to stress the importance of an at least once-weekly thorough running of av programs, spybot s & d, etc. to people is (i've been asked more times than i can count to bail out friends wtih computer problems brought on by viruses, spyware, etc. - including two large fire departments which shall remain nameless to protect the careless - is:
i walk them by phone or in icq, etc. through installing a lot of the programs we talk about in here. then i have them make a folder on their desktop and name it "neglected maintenance."
i stress to them that i have fixed their computer once and am not likely to go through much more of it, and they need to run through all the programs in the neglected maintenance folder one day a week. something about the presence of a folder called "neglected maintenance" seems to catch their eye, and i've never had to go back in and reinvent the wheel and do it all over again for them. (i don't mind helping somebody out of a jam, but i want them to learn how to help themselves, too)
people i don't like (like my ex), i charge them $80 an hour to fix their puters. i'll never forget the time his secretary called and asked me to paleeeeze come fix his puter, as she couldn't get in quickbooks anymore. 3 hours later, it was fixed. so, $240. just as she was writing the check, he came in the office and said "you expect me to PAY you for this?!!!" i smiled sweetly and said i'd be happy to put it back the way it was when i arrived. his secretary just kind of glanced up at me and kept writing the check. he still talks about how he can't believe i charged him to fix the mess.
