I treat all Mystery Cash as a gift/manna from heaven. If unclaimed within 14 days then it's our to keep... especially if no identifying auction number, return address, etc.
When customers make bank deposits/transfers to our account then we always recommend they use the auction number as reference - makes it easier to identify. If we expect two or more identical payments within a certain timeframe then we discount them different amounts so they are all unique amounts. Makes it much easier to sort them out if the sender isn't identified.

Oh, I know what you mean, those people who can't be bothered to let you know what the payment is for. I have played that game and it isn't much fun!

It's not that big a deal. It's easy to figure out who sent the money. To prove it, one of you send me a hundred bucks with no info attached and I'll bet I can figure out who the benefactor...er.. sender was
