I asked my eye doc the same Q awhile back. He sez scrached or damaged lenses cannot be repaired. Polishing the marks & scratches out of a damaged lense could change the prescription. Of couse part of his business is selling new glasses.

Tis sad but TRUE:

If ya try to polish a PLASTIC LENS, you'd end up turning it opaque, or, if you polished it enough to clear it, you'd warp it & end up with a mess.

With a GLASS LENS, it is extremely DANGEROUS to polish a damaged lens, as this would totally destroy the safety TEMPER of the lens...(which is actually destrpyed anyway by the chip or scratch yer trying to eliminate)

So, yer DOC ain't feeding you a line, but rather da real deal...

Listen to Tom. If you screw up the temper, those things could be dangerous. Not worth loosing your eyesight over. Get a new pair. Take the old ones and polish them up with the stuff they use on motorcycle windshields, available at a Harley or Honda dealer. Then put them away for temporary EMERGENCY use only.

PLEASE NOTE: it's the glass lenses which are particularily dangerous if they have ANY chips or scratches.

TEMPERING is done either by HEAT (quick) or CHEMICAL BATH (overnight) & works by setting up a SURFACE TENSION on the front & back sides of the lens. If damaged, these lenses can actually "explode" rather impressively.

Regular PLASTIC LENSES (CR-32) are NOT particularily shatter resistant to begin with, and chipped lenses should be discarded.

POLYCARBONATE PLASTIC (so-called "bullet-proof') are GREAT and virtually unbreakable, but tend to SCRATCH rather easily -- the scratches do NOT affect theit safety. ALL KIDS GLASSES should be made of POLYCARBONATE!

BTW: if the salesman tries to push "scratch-proofing" on ya on POLYCARBONATE lenses, just say "NO!" They come from the FACTORY already with a mandatory coating.

Same thing with ANTI-REFLECTIVE COATINGS & SCRATCH COATINGS. Another WASTE of MOOLA & a real rip-off! WHY?

Thw AR COAT has to be the LAST coating on a lens! THEREFORE, a scratch coat UNDER it is just plain SILLINESS & a waste of yer MOOLA
