Have 24 square cloths (nice fabric typically used for napkins) which were marked "Napkins" at the estate sale. I didn't look carefully enough and found later that each has a small buttonhole (about 3/4" in one corner. Any ideas about what's going on here?

I know that in England years ago, gentlemen would button the napkin to a button on the vest of their 3-piece suit. I would emagine the napkins you have were from an exclusive men's club, where proper dress was worn at all times, probably in England at the beginning of the last century.

They will almost certainly be linen, which is very strong and durable.
