The idea is location independence, i.e., you can access this from anywhere if you have Internet access. To use MS Access, you would have to carry the database with you, and hope that the PC you're at also has the software installed.

It looks like the idea is to have your items indexed on Google for people to search. If their search wasn't so complicated to get into to begin with (you gotta have multiple sites linking to yours to make yours "important" enough to show up in search results), they wouldn't need this silly program.

Notice the text: "Are you a merchant... do you have lots of stuff?" and the bulk upload blurb. Also the sell your used car text.
I am guessing it won't be auctions, for now, but rather a fixed priced model intergrated with google search, and google's other services such as froogle and google local.

Yawn, nothing much new here since we already have had a Froogle feed delivering traffic and sales for the past few years...
