For everyone who expressed an interest in my nephew, Ryan and his battle with Leukemia. . .he's been hospitalized again. He got an infection and his white blood cell count is down to 800. As soon as I know more, I'll let you all know. This is awful because he was coming along so well.

BTW, generally the normal white cell count is between about 4,000 and 11,000 per cubic millimeter of blood. Ryan's is 800.

Cheryl ... Isn't that a part of chemotherapy though? Doesn't it clobber your immune system?

The poor little guy. I feel so bad for him and for your niece. It is so hard to watch our little ones get sick. You just feel so helpless.

Cheryl,

As a father of four, I just can't imagine what it must feel like having a little tyke seriously ill. My thoughts are with him and his family.

It is part of it. However, when an infection sets in like it has now, it puts a halt to the Chemo. It's a catch 22. Chemo destroys good cells as well as the bad leaving you open to all kinds of odd infections. And, once you get one, the Chemo has to stop until it's cleared up.

It's just too much to go through for someone who hasn't even seen his 2nd birthday yet.
