What I'm about to show you is not for the squeamish..I've known about it for about a month and I hate it...or am inspired by it...
Its like congratulating a winner of the lottery..you smile, you shake their hand...but you don't really mean it.

People report an immediate jump in traffic to their sites (a 10x increase is, oddly enough, uniformly cited by many), but they don't report the impact over time, since this guy started this only a few months ago.
Once the novelty value wears off, investments in conventional media may be more profitable.
Still, it would be amusing to see if it drove any traffic to one's auctions. Translating traffic into sales is always the challenge, isn't it?

Well, I was "moved" to purchase 1 square. But somewhere in the process, I read that he has almost 4,000 and climbing emails to answer, and ONE of them is my email asking how to submit my link and title/alt text. It should be a while before I hear back from him at that rate. ... hope this wasn't a scam. lol

aintrich...cool, I hope you can measure any increase in traffic...even though its indiscriminate traffic, it is interesting.
There are loads of wannabees all over the web as you can imagine: onehundredthousanddollar, pixels for a quarter, pixels for a penny, etc..
All to little...too late.
One of the lessons the www proves time and again is that the second iteration of a good idea isn't such a good idea.
Ain't a scam...the boy's legit. As a matter of fact he's over here in the US doing a publicity tour,,talk shows...radio...Neil Cavuto...I'm sure there will be a book, lectures...
I believe I read where someone is helping him while he's gone...I'm sure he can afford it.
D*mn, but I love / hate this kid!

Here's a similar page http://www.milliondollarpage.us/
He says it was "inspired" by milliondollarhomepage and even links to it. His pixels are only 20 cents each, but as you can see, he hasn't sold many yet.

Not bad for probably a couple of hours work, and probably under $50 investment.

I had a domain that wasn't really used for much, so I set up my own pixel page. Sharing links with other sites really drives up the traffic. I was thinking it might be a good way to drive traffic to an eBay store, or even get direct sales of the main page (maybe advertising a popular item). Here's a list of about a 100 decent sites. My pixel page is on the list somewhere

Steve: I must be missing the point of all this.
I've seen your page, which is nice, and of course the original Million Dollar Home Page, but wasn't particularly compelled to click anywhere on either page.
Wouldn't it make more sense to put an Easter Egg in there somewhere so that people have an incentive to click and keep clicking?
Or am I *really* missing something?

sthoeme - does Google pick up all the links on your pixel page? Would that count as an inbound link to an ebay store? (I guess I need to work on getting more of those)

neglus, yes the links get indexed by google, although I'm not sure if helps with indexing results yet. The URL list has just been on my site for a short time.
I would assume any link to an eBay store would help with getting search engine results.

You don't actually have to have people click the ads on the million dollar pixel page to see results from advertising on it. It's the high page rank that's important (google rates it a 7 out of 10) - the search engine spiders will follow the links and see any page that his page links to as also highly relevant - therefore the linked pages will rank higher in search engine results = higher traffic and higher sales. So even a $100 investment (theoretically) should yield results.

Alex Tew reported yesterday that his site was under attack by hackers:
http://www.cnn.com/2006/TECH/internet/01/19/student.homepage.hack.ap/index.html
Frankly, I don't believe his story. Sure, it could have happened, but this is a guy who's addicted to being in the spotlight. This "attack" got him lots more attention just at the point where he has no more pixels to sell.

.. page links to as also highly relevant ...
Except that some searches (Google for example), discount "link farms" so it may not help as much in the long term. I really wonder how much use this will be once it is old news; most of these link items seem to be the same stuff I get in spam all the time and wind up having to filter out. When I went to MDHP I didn't find anything I wanted to click through to. It is colorful, though.
