I have gotten several inquiries on auctions lately with a reply address of [email protected].

They are legitimate buyers with legit questions. Where are they sending the message from to get that as a reply address.

I am just going to contact member and sending a reply through there but I thought this was pretty weird.

From one of the eBay boards:

I noticed that users are allowed to hide their email addresses? When I tried to reply to a member’s email (from my email client), I was told to “[email protected]” – what is that?

Yes, members do have the ability to hide their email addresses from the recipient on all of the Member Contact forms. However, this feature is not new to My Messages. Users have had the ability to hide their address on the Ask Seller a Question form for a very long time. Member-to-member emails always come from [email protected] (prior to that, they used to come from [email protected]). The reply to address (if you use email to respond) is either the member’s email address OR [email protected] (if they have hidden their address). The only thing My Messages changed was replying to [email protected] (instead of replying to [email protected]). We used the yellow button address to make it more visible that it isn't going to the member.

That said, we have found that the button doesn't appear in text emails so the reply address does seem a bit funny in that case. The number of users receiving text emails is quite low. We are looking at changing the reply to address for text emails (to point to the link, instead of the button.)

Am I to understand that my reply in that case would NOT go to the member, only to the bottom of the auction item page?!!! That would explain a lot.

I don't like to make my e-mail address visible for people out there and have been going to My Ebay to answer all inquiries, opting out of the buyer getting my e-mail address. Hmmm. I may not be understanding this very well. Help???

No. If you reply to [email protected] or [email protected] then the message is sent to the ebay member in question. Sellers retain full control of which messages and replies are displayed at bottom of their listings.

We have a contact link in all our auctions listings that point to a php contact form on our website. Doesn't reveal our email address to anyone, and all replies go through a send-only email account (all inward email is auto-deleted). Long time customers get personalised email addresses to reply to, so if they get compromised the account is disabled. Average monthly spam count is around 0.

Agitprop: Thanks for the explanation. I thought as much, but honestly some buyers have asked the same question more than once, and I was thinking perhaps they didn't get the message in their own e-mail (in addition to my displaying it on the auction page).
