I guess anything is possible. My HS ring had a diamond. Not that nearly that big, though. My vote is for glass. I know with my HS rings they offered birthstones that were glass. In the first photo it looks scratched at the facet edge (for lack of better description)? Isn't an emerald a hard stone? If it's a real emerald, it's a nice one.

Cheryl is absolutely right. Not an emerald, and maybe not even glass. The way the stone is abraded it looks more like plastic.
His wife's a jeweler? Let me take you on a tour of the Bay Area's discount diamond center, where there are hundreds of "jewelers" laboring at minimum wage creating custom jewelry out of crappy inclusion-ridden diamonds and cheap paper-thin settings.

LOL, fluffy. Maybe some parents are stupid, but mine never would have had a valuable emerald set into a class ring for me as a teenager! I had my class ring all of two years before it went missing. BTW, my diamond was one of those pinpoint diamonds that took a loupe to even find. Even then, my parents thought they were being extravagant. I suspect that the seller isn't going to like his feedback on this particular ring.

Doubt myself that emeralds would scratch like that.If they did, who would want to buy one? Personally I think it is glass.

emerald scratch easily, diamond, ruby, saphire are the hard stones, but not emerald.
Emerald also needs to be greased, wear it often .

Hwahwa, its glass.
I have never seen a class ring with real emerald that large before and I seriously doubt someone would go to the trouble and only mount it in 10K.
Not to mention that an emerald that size, Brazilian or otherwise would not be wasted on a class ring. If the kid was that spoiled, the design would be much nicer.

on MOHS' SCALE OF HARDNESS FROM 1 -10,10 being the hardest,
diamond is 10 while talc is 1.
emerald ,being part of the beryl family ,rates a 7.5 while ruby and saphire are higher.
It could be doublet or triplet- a piece of glass with a green stone ,you wont know until you take the stone out of the setting.
