anyone else noticed this in their html? just saw it in mine today...and i did NOT put it there.
wonder if this new useless gimmick has anything to do with the recent problems and slow downs? i'm assuming this got inserted in millions of store listings!

well, in a nutshell, it's ebay inserting their advertising into my listing(s) without my permission. i especially don't appreciate it since i don't sell electronics on ebay!!!
it's their way of promoting themselves on the backs of sellers who paid the fees. and here i thought they were "just a venue" and we paid our fees and WE did our listings.
it's an attempt at SEO. although, since i don't sell electronics, i suppose technically google, which is smarter than ebay, would consider it a form of keyword spamming.
what a super Christmas present! NOT!!! gee, yet another reason to diversify, imagine that.

When I paste that html into my html editor, I get the eBay Stores logo. Nothing more.
The "From collectibles to electronics, buy and sell all kinds of items on eBay Stores" part of it is what people who can't see the logo see, thus the "Alt" part of the html code.

neglus,
it's the alt tag written to describe the picture. as cblev notes, it's intended purpose over the years was to put a descriptive tag in place for people who couldn't see all the pictures. for example, someone with a slow modem connection. however, what's in the alt tag is also picked up by search engines. i see it in some of my listings but not others. strange. personally, i think "eBay logo" would be a descriptive enough alt tag. esp. given the scenario that i don't sell electronics, touted in the alt text. or alt attribute, to be more correct.
i just don't like not being asked about what goes in my listings!

have now found it inserted in many of my recent store listings. not sure when it started. i realize it's a ludicrous attempt on their part at SEO; i just really do NOT appreciate it at all, and most especially with that reference to electronics i don't sell!

This kind of sounds like ebay's cross promotion snafu. They forced everyone into cross promotion without telling a sole. You can opt out of it, but jumping through hoops is easier.
