I finally got around to reformatting my laptop drive and was prepared to hunt and install those downloads I can't live without when voila! I see that Google has most of them nicely packaged as a bundle for free download including: 6 months of free Norton anti-virus, ad-aware, mozilla firefox, etc. Also available: Google Talk which I think is a direct competitor to Skype and it's also free. Check out Google Pack on their homepage!

My laptop has it, never used it but it has it. I personally use a cellular modem. WIFI is a internet connection service found in many large city's. If you are in a city that has WIFI internet connection you can connect mobily with any computer that is set up for it wirelessly. They have transmitter/receivers set up on service towers and on building's all over the city. I think it is also in some airports and you will also find local WIFI in places like coffee shops that have "hot spot's".

You can get free wifi in most apartment parking lots, just don't get caught. Most people don't encrypt thier wifi networks.

My daughter told me that she offered our wireless network to a friend - told him if he ever wanted to get online just to park in front of our house!! and he told a friend...who told a friend.....
No - it didn't spread like that but it COULD have! I don't have ours encrypted.
When Pixiamom visited last summer and fired up her laptop she introduced our neighbor's wireless connection to our network...took me awhile to figure out what the HECK was going on!

WiFi is not a service. It is a silly made-up nickname for IEEE 802.11, which is a specification for networking computers wirelessly, using radio.
You may hear references to 802.11b, g, a, v, etc. These are different flavors of the standard having to do with what frequency your wireless gear operates and and how much data it can handle per second.
Google wants to set up free wireless internet service in many major cities. This sounds like a win. It isn't. They're not doing it out of the goodness of their hearts.
However, local politicians are falling all over themselves to make this happen because they want to be known as the leaders who brought Internet access for everyone, for free to their town.
The government -- ANY sort of government -- should not be involved in any way, shape or form with managing access to the Internet.
Mary Ann, turn on encryption. Seriously. It's not fun to have a child molester sitting in front of your house disseminating kiddie porn on *your* network. If you need help, email me.

It's ABSOLUTELY a good idea to turn on that encryption. Especially if you live in an apartment building or within a few hundred feet of other people.
Even if they aren't distributing kiddie porn from your address, their usage will slow down access for YOU!
You wouldn't leave your plugged-in telephone out in the front yard for all to use would you?

I was somewhat disappointed with the Google Pack. All that software is either worthless or I already have it.
If you want a REALLY GOOD selection of free internet software, try these folks.
http://www.softwarefor.org/ Software For Students.
It contains about 40 great software programs that are completely free, not demos. There are seperate versions for PC and Mac.
CD Burners, Sound recorders, graphics programs, an Office-compatible office suite, and several games.

neglus,
you really should turn the encryption on. your isp can walk you through it. it's up to you to prevent theft of your wireless service - we had a case here where a man is now serving two years in state prison for distributing kiddie porn. he had an unsecured wi-fi connection and somehow (as in they probably just parked on the street out front), 9 gigs of kiddie porn was uploaded via his connection. the law views the matter as, it came from your computer, if illegal files are uploaded via your connection.

The rule is, anyone with an un-password protected wireless connection is fair game. Sorta like out here in the west where we have what are called Open Range Laws. Those laws state that if you don't want my cows eating your flowers, you gotta fence them out. It's not my job to fence them in. Same is true with your wireless connection. If you don't want somebody surfing or who-knows-what-else on your dime, you gotta protect your system.

Almost everywhere I take my laptop I can get a free unencrypted wifi connection. In my GFs apt. I have my choice of 3 to pick from. It's great! Won't last forever, but until it's gone I won't be paying for one.

I understand that folks from time to time leave their front door unlocked.
However, I've never assumed that meant it was okay for me to walk right into their living room.

But it's not stealing if it is not secured. The FCC views open non secured wifi transmissions as they would a radio or television transmission. Your not breaking the law when you receive and listen to your radio or watch your TV so if someone has a wifi connection and does not secure it they have no way of knowing that it is not intended for public use. No offense but my opinion is anyone with a unsecure wifi deserves whatever happens to them to include legal actions for what happens on thir unsecure wifi.

I said it was wrong. I didn't say it was illegal.
If I go to my local bistro with my laptop, I know it's okay to use their wireless network because there's a sign telling me so.
You won't be able to access any of my wireless networks; we were early adopters of the technology and are well aware there are people in the world who can rationalize just about any kind of behavior. Most spammers see nothing wrong with what they're doing, either.
