With the new "new & used" options, I have a question on my books. I sell almost exclusively knitting books and magazines. Some of these can be 15-20 years old, but are like brand new. People have purchased them and then just kept them on shelves etc. My question is, does "used" mean that someone has used it? Can a 20 year old book that has not been used be classed as new? I always feel that when I put it down as used, people think it will have some wear.

According to eBay, it sounds like you can list any book as new as long as it meets these guidelines:
Condition:
Items should be listed as "New" if they meet all of the following criteria. If an item does not meet all of these conditions, it should be listed as "Used."
* No markings: There should be no markings or stickers on the package or item. If the item has a remainder mark, it may be listed as 'New' but the mark must be clearly identified within the listing.
* No signs of use: Item should be new, unread, and unused with no creases, bent pages, shelf damage, or cracked bindings.
* Complete contents: Item should include all original contents, including dust jacket (if applicable).

I'm not sure how you would clasify books but I sell auto and heavy truck parts that are vintage parts that were never sold and used and in that industry they are known as NOS or New Old Stock. I guess you could list them something like that.

books turn yellow thru passage of time,it is hard to believe a book that old is like new or new.
You are better off posing this question on amzn book site.

Thanks for the help.
cta: What is a remainder mark?
Yes, some books and magazines to yellow with age, but quite a lot were printed on good glossy paper that looks as if it could have been printed yesterday.

amber, A REMAINDER MARK is a mark (rubber stamp, felt marker stroke, or spray, often on a book's bottom edge) signifying that the book was returned to publisher as unsold, and then offered for sale again later at a much lower price. Considered to be a defect by collectors.

Thanks. I don't think that many of the books I sell would be classed as collectible, they are for practical use mainly.

I would be cautious about advertising books with some age as new. Using wording like never read, like new, excellent condition, etc would appear to work as well. This may avoid potential conflict with a customer who discovers the new book they just bought was printed several years ago. My general rule is if someone owned it before me its used.

alldings: Yes, that is what I have done up till now. Of course, I always give the age and condition of the book in my descriptions. It is just the option that has the "new/used" box that I am having a hard time deciding on. How new is new? In the case of a craft magazine, does it mean last few months, unread(how would I know), or in new condition?

Is there already a "new/used" box on the ebay listing form? I use Vendio and there are many "new" boxes ie: handling time that we evidently don't get the opportunity to complete. I wish Vendio, instead of asking about enhancements, would just KEEP UP with ebay!!

Just found items in Postcard category with a Condition field: New. When will we be able to list condition in Vendio?

I list a lot of my store items directly onto eBay, and the new/used category is there. I saw with the new eBay express, that is one of the qualifications for using it. Ebay express is only available to US sellers.

I dont think Ebay bidders are that picky on new versus used,if the book looks new to you, then it is new.

If you are using ebay's prefilled information it would be more fair to you to call it "new" if it meets all the criteria, since ebay's only choice is used or new.
When I make my own description I say "like new" which is often more accurate. I would not describe a book as new unless I was the only owner and it was never used, unless using ebay's prefilled info.
