I am about ready to ship a very large & expense item. They paid with a bank money order and I was wondering if there was a way to check on the money order to be sure it's legit? Am I just being too paranoid?

I just went through the pile I have on my desk and some of the bank issued ones have the banks phone number on it. You could call them and verify. If no phone number I guess you could do a yahoo or google search for the bank and get their phone number and call them. USPS money orders can be verified at the post office.

When it comes to money you can never be to peranoid. One must find their own comfort zone in these deals and apply the proper amount of CYA precautions. Take the MO to your bank and let them run a check on it. You may want to delay shipping until it clears.

Don't you have to pay by cash or check to get a Bank M.O.? Think the only worry is if the bank is legit and if so if the bank issued the M.O. My bank just runs the money orders through to check if they are OK. Takes a couple of seconds.

If it's issued by a large bank with a branch in your city, you can have it authenticated instantly at that branch. Same thing with a personal check also.

Money Orders are very easy to forge so it is best to have it verified by your bank or the issuing bank. Forgeries are allso very common with USPS money orders. Have you ever gone to cash a USPS one at the P.O. and they pull out a list of known fogeries to check it against?

your bank is the best place to turn to,no rush to ship yet,how does he know you have the money order, wait a day or two.
Once there is this money order,it is a genuine order, not fake, but the money order issuer went under.

Take it to your bank, there should be a routing number on it & your bank can check to see if it is legit. If the bank is legit then it is good. Its that simple.

With any demand bank payment like a bank issued Money Order you need to verify with the issuing bank that it will be accepted when presented for payment. basically you need to verify with the issuing bank if it's one of the occasional batches of bank Money Orders have been stolen or counterfeited. Verify authenticity before shipping any merchandise.

Routing numbers are no guarantee of authenticity as anyone can look them up in the ABA and Federal Resserve banking databases (both online). Nigerian scammer have access to magnetic ink and government quality printing presses so forging Money Orders is easy for them, but I'd stress that's worst case scenario.

I had already taken it to my bank for deposit but made a copy first (my bank says they can't even do that for me - something about the Terror Act???). I asked if there was a chance that the money order could be returned for any reason. I was told "We can't promise that the funds are good so just wait long enough before you ship" As you can see, my bank is no help at all.
I called the bank and the money order was fine. The shipment is on the way.
Thanks all

Find another bank. Preferably one that can answer banking related questions and help with banking problems.

sparkz is spot on - get a REAL bank that understands customer service and the business it's in. Ask friends and associates for referrals to banks they like, then check in some of the online databases like epinions.com and bankrate.com to verify they are top rated.

To quote some US banking surveys, "shows that the two largest banks in the country by assets, Bank of America Corp. and Citigroup Inc., have 10 of the top 20 worst accounts..." and "...bigger isn't better. In fact, the nation's largest financial institutions seem good at only one thing -- proving that by putting their heads together and working really hard, they can design some of the worst checking accounts in the country."
