My parents got these coins, among a lot of other items, from foreign missionaries in the 1940s. They've floated among my belongings all these years; at one time I thought I'd make earrings or such with them, but now I'm ready to let them go. If they have no value, I'll just discard them. But I'd love to know what country/language they represent.

Try coincollector.com. Terrific site and the people there are really helpful and friendly. Good luck.

Hi Roadie,
I know nothing about the value of Chinese coins, but I do know they bring good luck in the tradition of Feng Shui.

Tie them to a red cord and dangle the cord from your front door handle. It is supposed to invite wealth into your home.

If you find that they have little or no value, let me know and I will buy them from you. I can use all the good luck I can get!

LOL, you guys!

Seriously, though, thanks for the help! And, LtRay, I am very very gullible (ask my family and friends) so can't tell if you're serious about the feng shui bit.

Washington: How do you know the approximate years of the coins?

I'm willing to try selling them; I shudder to think how many have been thrown out in the last 50 years!

Roadsmith, I was serious about the Feng Shui.

The red cord is supposed to active the flow of energy and the coins represent wealth. By placing the coins near your front door you are inviting the flow of money into the home.

Duh, I just re-read your original post and realized that you did not even know what country these coins originated in. Sorry about that. My mind recognized them instantly and just jumped across your question of "Where are they from" straight to "what could they be used for".

LtRay, nothing like the middle of the night for a "conversation"! Thanks a lot for the information. I was thinking the coins looked Asian. I guess I'll try selling them. (Maybe I'll keep one for the Feng Shui of it all.)

They are very common. Up till recently they were used as ballast by ships in Asia. Technically the are referred to as Ching Cash coins. They have no numismatic value. I've seen them used as buttons on Balinese shirts etc.

I used to get them in 1000 lots and use them in costume jewely manufacturer.

My family is generally not very superstitious. Our neighbors, who had spent a year in Hong Kong and China, came back and brought us a brass frog with one of these coins on its tongue. It is supposed to bring financial good fortune if you point the tongue at your home.

So, on a lark we placed it in a flower bed. Some time later, my wife's income materially increased. We don't think that it had anything to do with it, but we make sure that the frog's tongue keeps pointing in the right direction

Cash, the frog is really a toad. If you want to see him REALLY work, you are supposed to place him inside the front door, facing the door to attract money into the house.

You are also supposed to give him a rest every evening by turning him away from the door. (Toads get tired too)

And the biggest mistake westerners make with their money toad is to place him on the floor. He should always be above waist level.

No, I'm not a Feng Shui expert, but I will be if we keep this thread going, lol. I just HAD to go google it.

Some southern Chinese also welcome lizards in their home-lizards are wall tigers, tiger rhyme with FU,which is fortune,so the more lizards, the more $$ you will have.

LtRay,

With all due respect, if we can keep the toad doing what he's been doing for another 4-5 years, we'll be fine. It sounds silly, but I'm superstitious enough to not want to mess with him.

BTW, it was the gift giver's view that he was supposed to face the front door from the outside to make money come in, and we do have him above waist level.

What an interesting discussion about feng shui!

I've done a bit of research this morning on how those coins do on eBay, and it's just a few dollars for a "lot" of them. So I think I'll just get some red ribbon and string one on the front door, then give one to each of our grown children. Who knows!

Roadsmith, they need to be grouped in 3, 5 or 8. Those are majic numbers. To just have one , leaves you wanting.

LtRay: You said "they need to be grouped in 3, 5 or 8. Those are majic numbers. To just have one , leaves you wanting."

Do you mean to SELL them in those groupings or to hang them on the doorknob in those groupings?? I want to do the Right Thing here, lol.

Roadie, I was refer to the number you need to tie to the string.

Since you have 4 , it would be ok to tie 3 to a red string and carry one in your pocket.

You could also have some fun with the grandkids. Pull the coin out of your pocket and tell them it is the majic pass needed for a ride on a space ship!

Start a new family tradition.
