I just got what I hope is a spoof--but nearly had a heart attack when it showed up in my e-mail. A receipt acknowledging payment for some dang collectible, $205.00, and "PayPal" wants me to click to verify my information. Of course I didn't, and my PayPal account doesn't show any such payment. But jeeeeeeez, scared heck out of me.

Got a duplicate of that message a few minutes later. Should I be doing anything with my e-mail address or PP account?

Okay, breathe in, breathe out, breathe in, breathe out.

Then in your best calm and cool manner, forward both to [email protected].

To ease your mind, click on the header info. Then you'll be able to see where it came from.

If you want to take the time, check the auction number of the swell thing you supposedly won. I suspect it will not come up as a valid auction.

Don't panic. I get the same email every other week. The first one caught me by surprise, and I went to check my paypal account. Then it dawned on me, I don't have a Paypal account. The same thing happened to me as happened to you. We were shotgunned. Someone gets ahold of a list of Ebayer's email addresses and sends one of those spoofs to everyone on it. If one or two people panic and click that link, the scammers score. These are probably the same people who send out the Citibank and Washington Mutual spoofs.

I just got a email from Paypal that I paid for a $395.00 watch through Paypal and it was charged to my credit card. I freaked but didn't respond and forward it to paypal and was bogus. i also checked my credit card and I didn't have that charge. Lucky Paypal told me it was a fraud. Do Not respond to link....

Ahhhhhhhhhh. Thanks, pals. This was my first PP spoof; I was a PayPal virgin. Jeez, it's scary to get that. I'll forward them to spoof.

I've gotten the same one twice this week about the watch. I sent them both to [email protected] and got a canned response to the first one and nothing on the second. These could really trick people! Fortunately, I did not click on the link.

I got that one too, what was really creepy is they had my name (bank account name, which is my first name that I only use for legal stuff). I was not reassured by the PayPal answer either, it never really said it was a spoof, just to check my account to see if payment was made, ect, ect, ect.

We should ALL be scared because our customers, the little old ladies who know enough about a computer to turn it on and enough about buying on ebay to place the bid and press the "Pay Now Button" , are getting the same stuff and do THEY have the presence of mind NOT TO CLICK ON THE LINKS?????? After they recover from the heart attack of getting such an email they will click away to make it go away.

It hurts us all every day and forwarding to "Spoof at Ebay" is like putting a bandaid on a hemorraging wound....NO ONE SHOULD EVER BE ABLE TO ACCESS PAYPAL THROUGH A LINK...not even a valid one, not even a PAY NOW one.

Got one 2 days ago and freaked as it had my full name!
I heard nothing back from Paypal after I forwarded it to Spoof.

So, naturally I looked here, and am re-assured that I'm not alone...but sorry you've had it too.

When they use your real name, it gives me chills. I'd love to drop Paypal if they can't keep our info. more secure, but 99.9% of my bidders use it.

The PayPal message from their Spoof Division was equally troubling to me, too. Didn't say it was a spoof, said it could be a number of things.

And tonight I get this one (the language use tells me it's probably from foreign sources):

"We regret to inform you that this account has been locked.
To unlock your account please follow the link below and complete all the steps.

https://www.paypal.com/

Please Note:
If your account informations are not updated within the next 72 hours, then we will assume this account is fraudulent and your account will be deleted.

Message 2023

Problem Description:

Suspicious account behavior possible account theft

PayPal Corp.
PayPal Account Review Department"

Honestly, how many little old folks will bite on this one! Be afraid. Be very afraid.
