Fortunately, dating this object is easy thanks to the engraving. The marks are also quite clear so I know that it is from Birmingham England and made by the Vaughton & Son company. What I don't know is how to read the initials and what they stand for. It's some kind of golf club, I think. Anyone have any ideas?

Cheryl,
Go to Google & enter: SSGC GOLF UK
Could be the right golf club.
Name is:
South Straffordshire Golf Club & it's first on the list at Google.

They have a discussion board there, maybe you could post a picture there & also find what V&S means, if that's the right place.

What if they want their spoon back?

I'm 95% joking, of course.

But I remember the man who amassed a huge collection of Cunard ocean liner china, silver spoons, etc.

On his death he bequeathed it all back to Cunard, where part of it is on display on QE2.

The accompanying placard has a word of thanks to the collector for returning the pieces.

But it also sternly points out that all these items were stolen off Cunard ships.

LOL, fluffy. Actually, it's the size of a souvenier spoon. So, unless they have a lot of babies at the golf club, they may not need it back.

You've got to love the way the English mark their silver. Makes it very easy to ID.

According to the mark "N", it was actually made in 1937 (that style N is the 1937 mark for Birmingham)
Which makes sense - as the golf club had to buy them before they could award them in 1939.

V&S is most likely the maker Vaughton (& Sons)
good luck with the golf club...

4 inches or so would be a demitasse spoon.
