Allright... here's the deal... I had a German bidder win a magazine advertisement for an Omega Watch, featuring Cindy Crawford. It was a nice ad, with a lot of interest. Yesterday, I got an email from him that said:

Ich habe heute in einem starken Pap-Packung ein Folder wie Abbildung erhalten. Wo ist die Uhr? Der Handler hat die 15$ erhalten.

My translator wasn't able to get anything coherent out of the message, so I wrote him back and said:

My German translator is having difficulty translating your message. Could you repeat your question in English, please? If you are
inquiring about when your item was shipped... Your payment was received on 1/21/06 and your advertisement was shipped on 1/23/06 via USPS airmail. You should be receiving it shortly. Enjoy!

Well... his response was to leave me a NEGATIVE! (which I also can't understand!!) It says:

Uhr vergetäuscht, kann ein Stück Papier mit irgendeiner Unterschrift für 20 &#83

Can anybody help me figure out this mess?!? At the very least, I'd like to figure out what he's trying to say so I can leave a response to the Negative (and Neg him as well!) Thanks for any help you can provide!

I think it says that he received an empty package today. Where is the watch? The "Handler" (PayPal or some such agent) received the $15.

Looks like he thought he was buying a WATCH not an advertisement for a watch

Here is what was translated:

I received today a Folder in a strong chirped-packing as well as image. Where is the clock? The Handler received that 15$

Clock vergetäuscht, can a piece of paper with any signature for 20 &#83

His later response was that you cheated him thinking a piece of paper was worth 20 etc...

REminds me of the time someone emailed me about the MOTEL I was selling in Anaheim CA for $5!! Another time someone thought I was selling nights in a motel. Gotta love the IDIOTS!

Good luck with this one

I just looked at your ad - there is NO WAY anyone who speaks a smattering of English could think they were getting a WATCH and not an AD..you describe the ad not the watch and "AD" is in the title. Maybe a fluent German speaker can help with an effective negative for you.

Thanks for the quick help with the translations... what an idiot! Here's my exact description of the ad:

*************

1998 Omega Constellation Watch Ad w/ Cindy Crawford!

This is a 1998 ad for an Omega Constellation watch, featuring Cindy Crawford. The size of the ad is approximately 8.5x11 inches. The caption for this ad is "Cindy Crawford's Choice!" The ad is in great condition! This vintage ad would look great framed and displayed! Add it to your collection today!
Click here to view the other Omega ads I have on ebay.

All ads are original and are NOT modern reproductions. I have a large assortment of ads available from the 1920's - 1990's. Visit my eBay store to see hundreds of other ad listings. If you are looking for a specific ad, let me know! Vintage advertisements are great for display, gifts, or as restoration aids!

*****************

(how many times do I have to say the word ad or advertisement?!?!) Not to mention... there's a PICTURE showing the ad!!! How dense do you have to be?!?!

Anyhow... any ideas for a good response to the neg? And how should I phrase the negative I'm going to leave him? I'm a little steamed right now....

Thanks Neglus I really appreciate the sympathetic ear! Sheesh... the stuff we paper people put up with. The worst thing is... it's a nice ad, and if this idiot hadn't bought it, it would have eventually gone to someone who really would have enjoyed it!

You are right - you should neg in English. I guess Sparkz isn't awake yet.

Are ads usually listed in the "Jewelry->watches" category? Maybe that is how the DUMBKOPF (a better word would be "Arschloch" or a$$hole) got confused.

Neglus,

The ad was actually listed in:

Jewelry & Watches > Watches > Watch Accessories > Manuals, Catalogs, Brochures

There's no specific category for watch ads, so it's where almost all watch ads get listed.

I just don't get it... did he think I was shipping him a $500+ watch AND Cindy Crawford too?! Yeah... I guess I'd cough up $15 real quick for that too!

Evidently he did think that! My husband (not a native English speaker) once bought a POSTCARD of valuable stamps thinking he was bidding on the STAMPS themselves (he collects stamps). He was shopping by category and the seller had listed this postcard in "stamps" and not "Postcards" AND he described the stamps pictured and not the postcard. When I contacted the seller he said "Did you really think you could BUY those stamps for that price?" My husband did LOL

My negative reply would be:

Fremder Kunde kann nicht Englisch lesen und hatte keine Idee, was sie kauften.

Which translates into English:

Foreign buyer can not read english and had no idea what they bought.

A day or two after you leave a negative feedback for him I would send him this in a email.

Sehr geehrter Herr,

Herzlich,

Which in english is.

Dear Sir,

The auction you bid on and won was clearly described in english as being a advertisement and not a watch. I have responded to your negative feedback with a negative reply. If you agree we can contact ebay and do a joint negative feedback removal. In future if you can not read the language the description is in do not bid.

Cordially,

Mike,

Thanks! I like everything you said! I left him the negative... but I left it in the english version (honestly, I'm more concerned that my English bidders understand what's going on than this German idiot...) I will, however, send him the german email you suggested in a couple of days. Thanks for the help!

If you need a good online language translator bookmark http://babelfish.altavista.com/ . It does the most used languages.

Reminds me of a time lonnnng ago when we were studying German in college. We were taught something to say to people who were driving slowly or crazily: "Fahren sie balloon, wen sie nicht das auto fahren konnen." (Drive a balloon, if you can't drive a car.) Tame today, of course; it'd be loaded with four-letter words! (And "konnen" should have an umlaut over the o.)

eauctionmgnt,

It's obvious why your DD (deutsche dumbkopf) gave you a negative - you didn't include a real life Cindy as pictured (he probably didn't want the watch either - just her).

"Oh, the humanity!"

Give reciprocal neg feedback, etc. as suggested by Mike which should produce the intended result (unless his name is Richard Gere).

Some of the ebay listings were up front and said you were getting the Xbox shipping carton and nothing more. Others didn't. Of course in our blame-free society the education system shares no fault for allowing high school dropouts like these to bid on eBay. Mind you, these bidders were probably all high school graduates. (In my day we had to have at least passed university entrance exams before we could graduate our high school.) Guess it's part of the "dumbing down of the USA"? Better watch out because the rest of the world isn't.

Remind me again that, "A fool and his/her money are soon parted," or "There's a sucker born every minute" (sigh). TANSTAAFL
