I've tried Gotheborg without much success and search Google has been pretty much a bomb. I've also emailed various Japanese antique shops and have not received an answer. Maybe someone here can point me in another direction. Through Gotheborg I did learn it is probably a Kiseru (Japanese tobacco pipe) set, but I'm afraid that's not enough information. I was, however, pleased to learn it is not an opium pipe. My bf is still teasing me because he thinks it is. I know the decoration is the 16-petalled chrysanthemum, crest of the Japanese imperial family.
Anyone know where I can go next? I've spent three days on this already and came here last.

Look up Tobako bon or tobakobon in Google - refers to both the whole set of smoking impliments and specifically the deep trays used to hold it all.

Did that. The problem is, the tray is not deep and the set doesn't resemble any of the tobako bons I looked at. I'm thinking maybe this item was for the use of house guests.

If you look at some of those old Japanese woodblock prints of men and women smoking a pipe in the Gay quarter in the Meiji period, you see similar pipes.

I'm no help with what this is but wanted to comment on the "came here last" statement.
I always try to read the "What is this??" type post 1st, as sometimes I know and sometimes I learn. It's what got me hooked on Vendio. So come here 1st next time!! It can be a real time saver.
