they had a story about Ebay recently in our local paper:

TITLE:Saturday Free-For-All: Long arm of the law spans the Web
SECTION:Viewpoints

PUBDATE:Saturday, February 11, 2006

HEADLINE:Long arm of the law spans the Web

TEXT: I found myself a victim of potential Internet fraud after bidding and paying for a laptop computer on eBay. The money was sent using an USPS money order to Texas, and then the transaction fell apart.

Feeling lost and that all hope of recovering my money was gone, I was advised to contact the Sheriff’s Office. I contacted an old friend, Butch Leonard, for advice, and he recommended I call Detective Mathis who handles Internet fraud cases.

I contacted dispatch about my problem and they sent two deputies who arrived in a matter of minutes to my office and collected the information concerning the transaction. I later talked with Detective Mathis, faxed him additional information, and within two weeks the long arm of the law had reached out and touched the “seller” and I received an e-mail that she would contact her police department and give them a money order.

I received a full refund from the “seller” last Saturday and my wife and I want to say “flank you” to the police departments for the courteous and professional care they provided handling this case.

Maybe you should try the next town over - you could pick a relative and never know it!

Gee I hope you get your money back. I can't image having an item worth that much listed on ebay, let alone getting scammed for it?
