Customer buys 5 shirts. Shirts are all the sale size but 1 is made of a stretchier material. Customer states that the shirts incorrectly described (were described by width, not label size) because only the stretchy one fits. How do you politely state that the problem is not with the size of the shirt but with the size of the buyer?

I would tell her that not all makers sizes are the same size as tag states ,thats why you put the measurements in the auction and its up to her to know her measurements. You as the seller have no way of knowing if a shirt will fit her.

I could think of a couple of appropriate replies, but since you specify they have to be polite, you wouldn't be interested in my suggestions.

You can't.

This is why clothing returns at catalog operations run about 25% or higher. I think Roger Horchow said his were more like 33%.

You gave the dimensions. Obviously it's the buyer's responsibility to make sure of fit.

I'd offer a return with a 40% restocking fee and no return shipping.

Interesting info here, Fluffy, about clothing returns. Because we live far from any real shopping, I buy all my sportswear from QVC--mostly in the Denim & Co. line. Once I learned my size on QVC, everything fits as it should. I have their denim pants in about 7 colors and have bought repeat colors over the years + shirts, jackets, etc. Returns are simple, can be done anytime within 30 days of receipt of item. Love that station.

And yet we sellers can buy QVC returns by the palletload. So, Adele, you probably had a realistic idea of your size to begin with.

Most catalog operations these days have operators who will tell you what the dimensions of the article are, if you have doubts about it perhaps being mis-sized. But it's clear that with the high rate of clothing returns, there is a lot of wishful thinking going on out there.

Fluffy: I wondered what those QVC pallets were all about! So they're all returns, huh?!

I've returned only about 8 items in the past 5 years of buying things on QVC. I've learned the hard way NOT to buy shoes or slippers via the internet. Trying them on is the only way, I think. Everything else I've mostly loved.

Do you have any idea how many items are in a QVC pallet or what the average price is to re-sellers like you? Just curious.

Adele, no, I've never looked into it seriously because the margins on clothing are so low. But there are usually brokers/liquidators at each eBay Live and at trade shows that cater to the off-price crowd, which includes many eBay sellers.

Here's a liquidator who currently has Haband and Blair first-quality and returns pallets. They are at most of the trade shows I go to. Good guys, I wouldn't hesitate to buy from them.

Offer your over-sized buyer "magic" size reduction* pills to correct their over-sight/weight. Loads of eBay listing for them...

*Individual results may vary. Exersize is also required to obtain desired results. A balanced diet is also suggested. May contain traces of nuts/dairy/soylent green.

Fluffy: I don't think I'd like to sell clothing, for all the reasons given by others here. When my mother died, she had some very nice things I'd bought for her, still with price tags, which I sold, but it was a real pain in the neck. Much harder work than for the collectibles and books I sell now.

Still, if I found a wonderful NEW item at a yard sale, I suppose I'd be tempted to try to sell it. My hat's off to those who do sell clothing!

Fenix did you ever figure out what you were going to write back to them and hear back yet?

I was thinking of just sending her a link to a rebounder

Actually I am trying to craft something that basically says that if she is confident that my measurements were wrong, please feel free to send them back for a refund. However if when I meansure them upon return, they turn out to be exactly what they were listed as I will donate them to the local batterd womens shelter in her name and be done with it.

Fenix...You might very politely suggest she push aside her Twinkies and Ice Cream long enough to waddle over to her computer and click on this link http://cgi.ebay.com/3-Bottles-NEW-FAST-FAT-REDUCTION-WEIGHT-LOSS-PILLS_W0QQitemZ5666084236QQcategoryZ1279QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem. If she purchases the product and follows the directions, those shirts should fit in about 3 weeks.

Now that sounds like a good idea about donating them and of course you are talking no refund to tubby? if measurements are correct? Priceless. Bet she keeps them with that reply. You could tell her to sell them on ebay and keep one that fits, and offer her the use of your pictures. LOL

I had a guy about 2 years ago want to return a leather coat saying it was not leather after he kept it for 6 weeks going on warm spring by then. Told him if he thought it was not leather he should have not waited 6 weeks wearing it no less to try to return it. Pointed him to my policy of within 3 days of reciept must notify me. Plus he could not speak English well was Spanish going by his name and how he typed words.
Anyway he wrote back saying sorry to bother me was another coat he had gotten. HUH? Looked at his buys and sure enough he had gotten a tweed jacket around same time. Well duh not leather got a giggle out of that after I got over being miffed.

To be fair - the girl is not tubby if any of the shirts fit. She's just not aware of her actual size. If one fits and the others don;t she probably needs to lose all of about an inch and a half to two inches.

I recall a thread about a seller who was offering Cuisinart and other decent kitchenware in New Jersey for great prices. We were trying to figure out where he was getting his stuff from that he could sell at that price. I bet it was buythepallet.com - they are in New Jersey. This is the first I've seen of them. Have to check them out.

Maybe, but there are lots of other liquidators in New Jersey and New York.

Trade shows, my friends, trade shows.

Push back from the keyboard, pack your battered 1971 Ford Maverick, and head out on the open road.
