Well that's news to me. I can't remember the last time I lowered a price on a listing so it does not realy effect me but it is nice to know. Yep, ebay didn't increase fee's much this year but they found other hidden way's to get their money in the end.

I had to end an auction early yesterday and as it was a $49.99 - I revised it first, as I normally do, to save the extra fees. I notice at the end there was a statement like "no change to listing fees" and I got no refund. I was going to write ebay today about this but I guess I don't need to now!!
Thanks for the heads up Tom.
Thanks for nothing once again ebay!!!

I couldn't figure out why ebay did what it did until I read this. I also would reduce prices, but for legite ebay reasons. To lower the price. Not to lower the price to then cancel the auction to save on fees. It sucks for the rest of us that others abused the system.

Hmmm, I never thought about lowering the price and then canceling the auction to save on fee's. I guess that was a loop hole wasn't it. Would have been nice if they just changed the policy to "Will no longer refund listing fee's for items that have price lowered and then listing cancled". Oh well, I never did it anyway so no big loss here.

I used to list low value items at $299.95 as a placeholder until I had time to check the html and images looked okay, but dissuade bidding in the interim. Then I'd drop the price back to 99 cents start. Guess that could be an expensive mistake under the new rule. I used to combine that with changing the duration to 3-, 5- then 7-days so the auction appeared further up in the listings (only really works with fixed price lsitings) to attract bidders. I'll have to check if the new rule is in effect on other eBays as they may still operate under the old rules.

I don't consider that abusing the system as I only do it for a good reason - such as the auction I ended yesterday was a combination of two chairs which I had listed separate the first time but combined for this listing. However the title was for 2 chairs and the description was indicating only one. There was only one day to go so I felt it better to start it fresh. Ebay will get their fees in the long run and maybe even more if the auction is understandable to all bidders.
I think that's as good a reason as trying to uncut your competition!

If you read the comments at the end of the article, one Ebayer claims that some sellers were listing high dollar items at high opening bids, and at the end of 6 1/2 days, if there were no bids, they would revise the title, description and change the pics and put up a piece of junk for .99 cents. The listing fees would then be lowered. They were getting 6 1/2 day listings on their high dollar items for 25 cents.

I see one guy that sells Air compresser pumps and pressure cleaner pumps on eBay under 3 ebay IDs that starts buy it now auctions for 139.99 to 349.99 If they do not sell he changes them to .99 cents and closes them 12 hours before the end time. He has been getting away with this for years.
