The last thing I sent to Australia, the buyer went to his local post office and purchased an international money order payable in U.S. dollars. Be sure to send the most economical air method that can be insured. Don't let him talk you into surface economy shipping. If he can't get a money order, tell him you will accept one pound of polished opals packed securely in a kangaroo scrotum

I did not realise you liked opal sparkz. a kangroo scrotum.? i know they have to be packed securely. but.
your sea mail takes about 4 to 6 weeks to get here. airmail takes about 10 to 14 days.
but when we send by sea mail it takes 12 to 14 weeks. i use western union to receive monies from countries like france and italy and even the usa at times. always gone well. costs the receiver nothing.
and i always let them know within reason how long it is going to take to get there. if it takes 4 to 6 weeks. i always say 7 weeks. this way they cannot dispute the time it takes and them saying they did not know it took that long. and they have the record of email same as you do.

Tom...That's exactly what I was referring to! I remembered you posting about that last year.
Agate18...For a pound of opals, my wife would catch a plane and deliver the item to you in person. I wanted to caution the OP about the slow boat to Australia. It makes the slow boat to China look like a speedboat. I don't know what his tolerance level is for the "when's my item gonna get here" emails that surface to down under will invite. On the flip side, the last two items I sent to Australia went surface economy. The first arrived in 4 days and the second arrived in 7 days. Seems like Qantas has an agreement with Australia Post to reserve x number of cubic feet on their planes for mail. If there isn't enough air mail to utilize the reserved space, they will fill it out with surface mail chosen at random. My customers got lucky both times, but I would think my chances of hitting the lottery would be better than doing it a third time.
Stop....Those AP money orders are as good as cash. I was able to cash mine at Wells Fargo Bank without a fee. Same as the money order I received from a customer in England. He purchased it at Barclay's Bank and it was in U.S. dollars drawn on a bank in New York. Paypal is probably one of the riskiest methods there is for international transactions. International commerce has been successfully operating long before Paypal came on the scene.

Well it depends what type of money order they get at the post office. I have accepted money orders from Australia before. Just make sure they get one that is cashable in the us. Send your buyer to this link. http://www.auspost.com.au/IXP/0,1083,CH2020%257EMO19,00.html . Most major Australian PO's sell Western Union money orders.
I love selling to Australian's. Never once had a problem with them and they are alway's very polite and end every email with a happy Cheer's!!!

Ship via USPS air mail. It is usually cheaper than the slower service and the parcel will be there in about 7 days. I have never had a problem what so ever with Australia as long as you use air mail.

Australian Post has domestic money orders and international money orders, the same as the U.S. postal Service. Specify they send an INTERNATIONAL money order payable in U.S. dollars.

To clarify, Aus Post sells Western Union Money Orders in US dollars (exactly the same as available in US 7-11 stores) at most major post offices. They are not Postal Money Orders and cannot be cashed at USPS outlets, but can be cashed or deposited to US bank accounts - usually free of charge. Cost to Australian buyer is AUD$8.65.

I had 3 packages I sent AIR letter post was to get to Australia in 7-10 days and they apparently went surface instead and I paid for Air mail. I was very mad and let the post office know about it.. BUT I have since been putting AIR MAIL TO (what ever country) stickers on all sides of my international packages. It has so far stopped any air mail from going surface--but then again it may still happen.

I usually offer Australians a 1.5% discount on money orders because they seem to feel slighted by my not accepting PP from them (e.g., Hey, I'm descended from the UK just as much as the Americans and Canadians you'll accept PP from).

I love my Aussie customers! I accept PayPal from them and have never had a problem. They understand how long it takes to get shipments (although I, too, have had some surface shipments arrive in less than a week) and have been unfailingly cheerful, complimentary and among my best customers. I'd like to clone these fantastic eBay-ers!

Airmail to Aussie takes 3 to 5 business days from here depending on which side of the continent the package is going to. No need for PayPal as we have an Australian bank account so payments are a breeze. (For those Aussies that are cash poor we also accept gold, diamonds or opals but not in kangaroo pouches as they're a prohibited item.)
