I uploaded a bunch of auctions yesterday and some more today and so I started clicking on them to double check if I had everything in their correct categories and that if I had included shipping amounts, etc. You know, all the basic stuff and then I noticed that a whole bunch of my items had second categories that said (FREE) at the end of the second category. I clicked on the free link and this is what popped up.
Free Second Category Promotion
Occasionally, eBay may choose to automatically promote listings in a certain category by adding a second category for free. If this is the case, there will be no additional fee for the second category. If you voluntarily list in two categories that are currently being promoted, you will see a refund for the second category charge in your billing invoice.

Does it really matter. By Ebay's own study, less than 5% of all bidders even use catagory search. You are just as well off not using it at all.
Plus you will have to pay very close attention on your relists so you don't get charged for the second catagory when you do relist. It is one of Ebay's sneaky was to increase listing fees.

I signed up for the free month at Sellathon to check my listing instincts, mainly. Perhaps 1 in 50 searches involves someone doing a category search.
Still--there are some categories, I know, where buyers tend to browse the "ending soon" items, and I still will use my judgment about opting for a 2nd category.
