My daughter has a new job with lots of driving involved. Can anyone suggest a hybrid SUV that has low gas mileage. (Not sure if I am wording this right).

And you were perhaps planning on buying it on eBay?

I know what you are getting at Fluffy, especially in view of the kind of crap that has been posted in the EO this week, but have you READ posts at the Round Table??? YUCK!

While the Round Table might be, theoretically a more logical place to post queries like this, in practice that place is no place that most of us want to visit! Almost all of the threads are political in nature and even those that aren't soon turn into brawls-for-all with the lefties vs the righties. I don't blame niel for posting here instead.

I guess if enough brave souls without political agendas went to the round table to post it could become the forum Vendio intended. The problem is wading through all of the mucky posts takes a lot of time - I gave up on it.

Maybe if posters used "OT" in the subject line here readers would know not to read if they want to stick to business? Of course it is obvious from the niel's subject line that the topic is mostly "OT".

The Prius has the best ranking. Masde by Toyota it also has the best repair records and and at holding it's value.

Honda makes a hybrid Civic that is right in the tail of the Prius and that ranks higher in safety tests.

They both start in the low 20K

Good luck in your search! I've been thinking about one of the hybrid SUVs myself.

There are thousands of discussion boards all across the Internet about every topic imaginable and at about every interest level imaginable.

If I want to learn about, oh, replacement double-paned windows for my house, I go to my trusty Blingo and type "double-paned windows", which yields over 9,000 pages with information. Even though it is likely that some Vendio people actually have double-paned windows in their houses, I don't start that subject here because that is not the topic of this forum.

It's called respect. I respect the purpose of this discussion area.

You want to be disrespectful and too lazy to put the topic where it belongs? Fine. We have no moderators. You'll get away with it.

But what happens the next time you need an answer to an eBay question? Hear that hollow echo!

In this, as in most things, you get what you deserve.

Sorry for the inconvenience of reading my post. I should have put OT. I rarely post on here but in the past everyone has been so nice and helpful. I mostly lurk and will do so from now on.

You may want to log on to EDmunds.com and get some unbiased opinion on cars!!
I came across some interesting discussion on hybrid cars one day, that the battery costs 1k and the warranty is 2-3 years and the deal is to replace it before warranty expires .

Hybrids are too new and have many bugs to be worked out before they are ready for the average person. Let the corporate fleets do that task and stick to a conventional vehicle. There is also a safety factor involved. In the event of a pin in accident, you better hope that the first rescue personnel on scene have received the specialized training necessary to safely extricate the victims. If a hick town volunteer fire department shows up, that "jaws of life" or a simple pry bar in unqualified hands can become the source of an explosion, fire or electrocution. A source of power strong enough to propel a 2500 lb vehicle can easily become a gigantic arc welder.

We bought a Prius a year ago January. It's the best car we've ever had or driven, and in our long marriage we've had everything from a VW bug (the early years) to a Mercedes (to get a luxury car out of our system).

We first rented one for a weekend from a Prius dealer for very little. We drove it for a couple hundred miles in all conditions--freeways, city driving, mountain roads. We passed on the freeway when we wanted to--lots of power--and our mileage was very good.

My husband kept records on mileage etc. last year, and we averaged 45 miles per gallon overall (and no repairs). We live in the mountains and have tough road conditions at times. This is a wonderful vehicle to drive--very roomy (husband is tall and there's lots of leg- and headroom), seats are very comfortable, controls in dashboard are easy to read, back seat astonshes all the tire kickers in town when they peer in plus friends who ride with us. The hatchback trunk is perfect for the two of us on trips. I LOVE driving this car.

Myth #8 about Hybrids

8. Hybrids pose a threat to first responders.
Now that hundreds more hybrid cars take to our roads each day, some critics have wondered if public safety agencies should be concerned about all those high-voltage battery packs zipping along at freeway speeds. Not too much. Turns out that a good amount of training -- and, in case of fire, lots of water -- should be most of what a first responder needs upon arriving at an accident involving a hybrid.

Knowing a few basic things about hybrids -- the location and construction of battery compartments, the color (orange) used to designate high voltage cables, and the location of fuses that will isolate the electrical system -- is enough to help first responders save lives and remain safe in the process.

Firefighters have coped with advancing automotive technologies for years, and they will skillfully deal with hybrid cars.

Since Hybrid cars cost more in the first place and you have to spend $1,000 to replace the battery every 3 years, how much money are you actually saving?...probably none.

Myth #2. Hybrid batteries need to be replaced.

Worries about an expensive replacement of a hybrid car's batteries continue to nag many potential buyers. Those worries are unfounded. By keeping the charge between 40% and 60% -- never fully charged and never fully drained -- carmakers have greatly extended the longevity of nickel metal hydride batteries.

The standard warranty on hybrid batteries and other components is between 80,000 and 100,000 miles, depending on the manufacturer and your location. But that doesn't mean the batteries will die out at 100,000 miles. The Energy Dept. stopped its tests of hybrid batteries -- when the capacity remained almost like new -- after 160,000 miles. A taxi driver in Vancouver drove his Toyota Prius over 200,000 miles in 25 months, and the batteries remained strong (see BW Online, 12/28/05, "Taxicabs Start to Turn Green" ).

There's little to no information about the cost for replacing a hybrid battery, because it hasn't been a requirement with today's models. When that day comes, owners will replace a single cell -- there are hundreds in a hybrid's battery pack -- or a module, not the entire pack (see BW Online, 1/05/06, "Pursuing New Power for Hybrids" ).

If I am right, the Ford Escape is the only SUV hybrid on the market. I haven't seen any ads for Honda or Toyota, but maybe they do make one. Personally I would get a Ford Focus, a Nisson Sentra, Honda Civic, etc with a standard gasoline engine & overdrive manual transmission. The extra cost of the hybrid will not save you any money if you are drivina lot.

Sanmar - Toyota, Honda, Ford and Lexus all have models on or coming onto the market by the end of summer. Saturn is supposed to have one on the market end of the year, early next year.

Just noticed Niel's original question had to do with hybrid SUVs. Sorry to have butted in with the Prius info. We're looking hard at the Lexus SUV hybrid, or Toyota or Honda hybrid SUVs coming out soon.

I do have to say, though, that, as environmentalists, we believe in putting our money where our mouth is, whenever feasible. Our solar panels won't pay off for about 12 years, but we installed them anyway. Just doing our little bit to help the earth.

I for one can understand why niel would come here with an off topic post rather then venture into internet land and ask the question of a bunch of virtual strangers.

So much great advice has been given on this board. We check in with each other every day. My internet friends so to speak.

I also do not venture into the round table for fear of....well it's just a scary place.

I think off topic topics would be okay if they were started with OT.

Glass -it's only half as scary as it's been made to seem here. It's one of the other Vendio boards dominated mainly by political debates although we occasionally have completely meaningless conversations like our weekly critiques of American Idol or me and Roady occasionally indulging in West Wing talk.

If you walk into one of the political conversations wthout knowing the history, it can be a bit scary. There are some longterm mutual dislikes, some extremeists on both sides of the political forum and a smattering of full blown the kooks, and then there is me, the always rational and reasonable, kind hearted one .

LOL - but seriously, it can get a bit heated but at the same time, there is a great deal of good natured teasing and fun.
