OK I have a question for you guys that take the pink money orders. I have a Canadian money order for 250.45 for a eBay sale that I have not mailed yet ,I took it to the post office to cash it and they said it was a fake because the computer said contact supervision money order bad...blah blah. I flipped it over and it said I needed to validate it if it was over 100.00 ,which I didn't do cause I've never had a money order over a 100.00 from Canada.American ones you just flip over and sign, show your drivers license. So I came home and called and validated it ...no problem with the validation. Went back and they still had it showing up as a fake . Would not validating it before I went make it not good till its validated and does it take time for the computer to update it so it is good ? Also I called the Canadian Post back and told them what happen and the lady on the phone said the money order is good and to have my Post Office call them to learn how to cash it.

Canada Post gave you some good advice.
Ask your Post Office to call Canada Post.

OK I'm back from the post office and they had to get a copy of it and call me back later today or early tomorrow on the money order because all the lines at the Canadian Post were busy (all operators) and/or automated. So we wait to see if its a real money order or a fake. The Canadian Operator checked it by its serial number hwahwa and said it was good.Thats the only reason I haven't turn the buyer in to eBay. Glad I hadn't mailed it before I tried to cash the money order. Thanks for your reply otteropp. They tried running it thru the computer again when I was there ,just to see if it had cleared ....Postal Supervisor said it might not have updated yet in the system after being validated.Still no go.

Bummer, always something to make it harder to get international payments. Next they will ask you to dance the jig. Kidding.
Good luck to ya.

Here's Me-&-Ralphie's experience with IPMO's:
1)We take it to our local PO >>
2)The counter-person (ain't we just too PC?) runs it thru the machine-scanner...APPROX 95% OF THE TIME, IT COME UP INVALID! >>
3) We politely ask the counter-person to INPUT the serial numeros MANUALLY >>
4) Viola! as they say in GAY PAREE! The MO now comes back as VALID!
THE MORAL OF RALPHIE'S LIDDLE STORY?
Ask yer COUNTER-HUMAN to input the numeros...MANUALLY, if the scanning shows INVALID...

Thanks Tom...I'll have them try that tomorrow if they call and say its good come back. They matched the numbers on the screen with the numbers on the money order.Would it still be wrong and need to be hand typed in ?
lol irked ...I'm dancin ,I'm dancin !!

Good question
All I know is that everytime I go, they run the MO thru an AUTO-SCANNER (like at the supermarket when they scan yer personal check?) and, EVERYTIME, it pops out as INVALID!
Then they get 3 clerks huddled around the machine until one finally grunts: "Aw, that thing never works right"
So, they have to input all the MO info by hand, and, faster than poopoo thru a goose, the MO magically now becomes...VALID!

ROFL Tom
"Then they get 3 clerks huddled around the machine until one finally grunts: "Aw, that thing never works right" ...I saw that today but instead of trying to hand type it in ,they went into panic mode lol was kinda funny really ...must call supervisor ""whoop whoop"" "danger danger"...screen says must call supervisor do not cash...like little robots bumping into each other then loudly one says "wait here" like I'm gonna run off or something. And to top it all off it was really really busy cause of it being the last tax day.lol I think half of Beaufort thinks I tried to pass a fake money order. Ugh I truly think I'm gonna stop take International sales all together.Been a long day. Thanks for all your help.

I have had EXACTLY the same experience as Tom - it never works with the scanner - they HAVE to input manually. The seasoned clerks at my PO know how to handle it but whenever I get a rookie they have to consult with the others to figure it out - and this is for piddly little $ amounts too.

Why are you making a special trip to the PO when you can deposit them right into your bank account? They deposit just like any other check and there is NO service charge to deposit them and the funds are available right away. At least at any bank that is worth a hoot.

Since ALL the INTERNATIONAL POSTAL MONEY ORDERS did not have USA FED RESERVE numbers on the bottom, every bank I've tried to deposit them charge a bundle to clear them -- SOUTHTRUST was $30!
The USPS, otoh, is required by international agreements to cash them FREE OF CHARGE, as long as the PO has the cash on hand...

So you don't accept personal checks either? Same problem if they bounce.
I can state all of the banks that I use, TCF, Nova Savings, Wells Fargo, US Bank, and Norwest do not charge a single penny when you deposit international money orders into your bank account.

Last Canadian MO I had was deposited free in Wachovia, no charge to my account, but you had to do it at the teller window, not an ATM deposit. Before that, my small contract post office around the corner sent me to the main branch, where staff is generally clueless, and I still have to print out appropriate procedure for scanning, international shipments, etc.

No stone I don't take checks...safe payments only for me.Well hid cash,Postal Money Order, and Paypal.... Confirmed addresses only through Paypal if the order goes over 50.00.
Now back to topic...Whoohoo the money order has been cashed. The super nice helpful postal supervisor called me back and said they found out how to cash it so come on back in. Turns out that Pink International postal money orders over 100.00 have to be scan in under a different screen other than International postal money orders. They have to be scan in under treasury checks. Went through with no more problems and the package is on its way. Thanks you all for your help
edited to add our bank...MCAS credit union doesn't charge anything for money orders either.I just like to take them to the post office to make sure they are good.

I received several of the Canadian pink MOs this year and no problem getting them negotiated free of charge through my main local bank. They do come in several formats (unlike other countries that issue them) so it can be a bit disconcerting to get one that looks different than the others you've received. Might have been different format as it was denominated in USD and not the usual CAD, but at least the amount was correct...
I usually tell US customers that they can send any old money order and that the cheapest are to be found at their nearest WalMart, 7/11 or supermarket.

If you only accept safe payments, then why do you accept PayPal? A confirmed address means nothing on a fraudulant transaction. FYI.. PayPal does not check for fraud on transactions for up to 7 days after the transaction. For more risky than a personal check.

I think some here are giving rather poor advice about BANKS and INTERNATIONAL POSTAL MONEY ORDERS...
Perhaps some USA banks give ya a big smile and KISS when ya walk in the door with one of these, but, from what I've been told at TWO different banks, that ain't always (or even usually) the case...
YES, you can deposit them...And, YES, they will clear eventually, but some banks are gonna charge ya up the wazoo for that service because these suckers HAVE TO BE SERVICED BY HAND & SENT FOR SPECIAL HANDLING!
That's why the famous international financier, J.P.Ralphie recommends that, if ya get an IPMO, you do the following with it:
A) TAKE IT TO THE PO! The USPS is required by international agreement to cash (as long as CASH is in the drawer -- don't go first thing in AM) IPMO's -- FREE OF CHARGE!

371.2 Availability
International postal money orders are exchanged with countries using the pink International Postal Money Order (Form MP1). Exhibit 371.2 lists the countries that accept this form. The maximum amount for a single postal money order is $700 unless noted otherwise in parentheses in Exhibit 371.2.

I agree, and your the one. If your bank is charging you to deposit anything, then you need to get a new bank. Any bank worth a hoot will deposit the money order just as any other payment, no charge.

Truth be told Stone there is no completely safe payment.
Well hid cash : Could have been printed in the buyer basement last night
Post Money Order : Can be faked or stolen and are all the time
Paypal : Use of a stolen credit card, unconfirmed address stating they didn't get there item...the list goes on .
Banks charge 25.00 or more for a bounced check.... Kinda like Monopoly do not pass go ,do not collect 200 dollar end of story.Unless you want to drive from SC to say uhh California to beat the crap out of someone cause their check bounced. I choose not to go that route, at least with paypal you can fight the charge back most of the time if you follow their rules and they only charge 10.00 if they take the money back.
Pretty much what it boils down to is I don't tell you how to run your business or call you names like stupid, moron, busybody, someone who wears pink tights and the list goes on cause I've seen them so please don't tell me how to run mine. Thank you

Thanks toasted for the heads up on HOW to scan the numbers at the post office. Since my PO doesn't want to cash international money orders at all, even Canadian in US funds, and require the post master's presence in order to do anything "unusual" (they're lovely people, just not used to much beyond selling stamps), this may come in handy some day when I don't want to go to the bank but would rather have cash in hand immediately.

Your very welcome birgittaw, This money was Canadian in US funds and the postal supervisor said she learned something new yesterday when she had me on the phone so it must be a wide spread thing not knowing how to cash it. I started out in the main post office downtown and they pretty much pushed me off on the smaller post office lol but in the long run did me a favor cause the supervisor there really went out of her way to find out how to cash it. Super sweet lady. The one in the main office couldn't cared less about it.

The real key to successful international sales is to have a good bank i.e. one that understands international banking and doesn't charge an arm & leg for non-standard deposits, transfers, etc. and a good relationship with your local Post Office and Courier companies. Between them it makes life so much easier.
