Antique Furniture people - when did they use Horse Hair as furniture padding and when was it stopped. Was the next material straw and when did they use it?
Can anyone help?

At our mountain cabin, our family put the back seat from an old Dodge outside at the campfire site. It had been put there in 1925 when the family bought the property, and it was stuffed with horsehair. I don't know what year the car it came from was. Not much help, but maybe a little!

A picture of the furniture item would be more helpful in dating. There was no firm cutoff for horsehair, particularly since it could be washed (hopefully) and reused. It was not superseded by straw; it was sometimes used in combination with it, but when straw was used extensively in a piece of furniture it was generally because it was cheap furniture. There are other natural fibers that were also used.

Your fire-pit was a 55 gallon drum right and you burned pressure treated fence post ends and old chunks of roofing paper and kept the Old Milwaukee in a gunny sack in the creek?

My kinda digs, can I come for the weekend I'll bring the squirrels?

Can you pack up one of those squirrels and send it to my mom Prof?

The dog is not so happy with the move. No squirrels to chase in her neck of the woods and no real place to run. Her running days may be over though, so see if you can make it a three legged squirrel. She tore her ACL and was supposed to have surgery today. She may have gone from a field dog to a canal dog. Thankfully she loves to swim almost as much as run.

Nothing to do with horse hair, but canine cruciate ligament surgery doesn't always mean the end of chasing squirrels. After rehab and several months off, most dogs can go back to normal activities--mine went back to agility, though much less seriously than pre-injury. Be aware that the other CL is likely to go, too; mine went back to agility again after that repair. I just retired him a couple weeks ago at the age of 11.

Thanks Karen. She's an 8 or 9 year old Britney. Used to hunting during season and going to the field every weekend when not to run. In the meantime, she treed squirrels all day. Unfortunately my parents moved to their retirement dream home on the coast of Texas, no yard since they live on a canal and no "fields" to speak of so they have been taking her to the beach. Britney's get a little whacky if they don't get a good run on a regular basis. She loves the water so they are hoping that swims in the canal will be enough to keep her up for awhile. Maybe she can chase the pelicans for entertainment.

Volkswagon used it in their car seats for a long time as well as cars in the thirtys. I always hated working with that stuff and it was expensive to buy.

Profe, LOL!

My husband's grandfather was an attorney from LA who bought hundreds of acres in the So. Calif. mountains. The acreage the family had an 1870s cabin on was so remote that the wife and kids would go up there for 3 months at a time. (Bringing their maid!) There was an apple orchard tended by a handyman.

BUT the family was very practical, and they hadn't brought up any outdoor seating, so the old Dodge backseat was very handy. They drank their mixed drinks, cooled their watermelons, and made their coffee, from branch water from the creek. I don't think they had any Old Milwaukee around.

This property is still in our family and we have the 5th generation visiting there now. LOVE it.

Well I've learned a lot today.
I had no idea that horse hair was used in cars and I never would have guessed that it was still being used in the 30's.
I remember the "Furniture Guys" from PBS would reuse it when they re-did furniture.
Whatever happened to those guys - I always enjoyed them.

Fenix hope it went well with the surgery!!

I talked to my mom today. Turns out she had the surgery on Wednesday. They also discovered that she has a heart murmur so they went with a lesser surgery. Dr wasn't comfortable keeping her under long enough for the more complete surgery so her field days are pretty much over.

She's drugged and miserable (they took out a couple fatty tumors she had as long as they were there so she's sore in 4 different places). Mom says that she has "poor poor pitiful puppy face" made even worse by the "lampshade" on her head but they said everything went really well, she just has to basically be carried around for the next week until stitches come out.

Thanks for asking. She's such a sweet smart dog. She's also become a helper dog in the past few years. After my moms second back surgery she started picking up things that people dropped and bringing them to them, never had to be taught, she just does it. Takes in the mail when the mailman gives it to her, gets the paper in the morning. Her vocabulary is pretty amazing, you can tell her to take something to someone in the house and she gets it and takes it to them. My step is kicking himself for having her fixed, he's had Brittney's for most of his life and says she is by far the smartest dog he's ever owned or worked with.

My husband slept on a horsehair mattress when he was growing up in Switzerland in the 1950's (of course the house was built in 1703 and in his family for most of that time. I have NO IDEA how long that mattress has been in use). He loved it because it exactly fit his body. When we visited I tried sleeping on that bed and was miserable!

Last I heard, you could still get a cheap custom car upholstery job done in Mexico where they still used horse hair.

Lady, you really would need to give us a pic of the furniture if you wanted a reasonable range on the date of the piece.

Even cheap reproductions could have horse hair cushions.

Forgot to add, as for your question about straw, it has been used ever since man decided he did not like sitting on the ground.
