What is this stitch and what do I need to do it? I have been looking at sewing machines all morning, I know this can't be the secret rocket science stitch so certainly some machine does it but among those that show pics of their stitch patterns, I cannot find it.

Check sergers. Maybe it was done on a serger, not a sewing machine.

Looks like serging to me, too. But is the stitch you're IDing just the light-colored strip at the very top, or is it wider? Could you show a larger closeup?

Tried to take a new pic and of course the battery died... now i have to wait for the recharge.

The stitch is just the white part in the pic. it's about 3/16" wide.

I looked at some surgers and it does look like that is what I am looking for - now just need to figure out why you would need 5 threads as opposed to 2 or 3. Is it decided by the fabric you are working with or just a decorative thing to have multi color stitching?

More than one color of thread would be for a decorative effect. Beyond that, I have no experience. Five threads or three. . . who knows?!

Is this something on the outside of an item or garment? Is there a reason you have to duplicate it completely?

No, doesn't need to be exactly duplicated. It's actually going to be an inner seem. I used the piece I took the pic of because it is the only thing I could find that has the stitch in a different color than the fabric it is on.

Going thru my closet - it looks like it's the stitch of choice for seams in woven and stretch fabrics.

Fenix, it looks like a serger stitch. I have a machine and you do not have to use 5 threads. 2 will suffice. My machine has cutters that trim the surplus as you sew. Makes quick work of t-shirt and other materials that tend to ravel.

LT - thanks - the one I found today also does the cut which which is perfect for me. As a lefty I have never found a pair of good scissors that allow me to cut precision lines.

Thanks all so much for the help!!
