I do not sell much, but I am cleaning out my kids clothing. I sold one of my daughters shirts (gymboree). It still had the tags and I am absolutely 100% positive there was nothing wrong with it when I sent it out. This ebayer with 3000+ (100%) feedbacks buys it. She writes me and tells me that it has purple dye on it, should she try and get it out. With in 2 hours of receiving the email, I told her I had no idea what happened to it. Just send it back and I will refund her, so I also asked if the other item she purchased was okay? All I can figure - if this is a legitimate claim, is that something bled through the postal (priority bag). I do not believe her since she wanted all these discounts and wanted alot more of my items but I would not discount them, just combine shipping. So she only bought two. So I looked to see if she had bought another like it for less & sure engough she did. It was identical except mine had 3/4 length sleeves and this one had short sleeve. Someone auctioned it and she got a real bargain. Now 10 days later she wants my address to sent it back and would like me to refund and pay her shipping back as well.
I think she says there was something purple on it because it is a white shirt and the flash gave it a purple cast in the picture. She has just been selling like crazy when I look at her stuff. I think it must have taken 10 days to figure out how to wreck my shirt with something purple. If it were me and I had received it and someone emailed me immediately - I would have responded immediately and sent it back (she was obviously shipping her ebay stuff). No emails for 10 days and I did include a packing slip with my address. Do I still have to honor the return? My policy says no returns, oh and by the way so do her ads. She did not buy insurance! Should I still take it back??

I wouldn't take it back. Sounds awfully fishy to me.

Don't take it back unless you want to feel bad about it for a long time. If she negs you over it, just be factual and professional in your reply to her neg -- then return the favor with a factual, professional reply.

I guess there's a risk if she used PayPal, as we all know they will probably side with the buyer most of the time.

As far as paying for "return" shipping, I haven't seen one large commercial business cover the cost of return shipping -- such as Land's End, Sears, etc. They might make it easy to return items - providing a simple address slip to use, etc., but if you read the fine print and check your credit card the month after you return something, they conveniently deduct that return postage from the refund they provide you.

Let us know how it works out.

I think she just wanted a partial refund because she felt she overpaid when she got the other shirt for a really low bid price. But when I said just send it back - it caught her off guard. Now by asking for all these refunds and paid shipping she thinks I will just refund her and tell her to keep it, or offer a partial refund. How long does she have to leave me negative feedback?? Is it 30 days?? Thanks! I like ebaying, but then I run in to one of these every now and then and stop for a long time. So now my closets are overflowing, because I hate to deal with people like this!

Now my thinking has turned devious...

"Gee, I'm so sorry about the purple dye. I hope you didn't touch it as it must have come from the bacterial meningitis clean-up that we had to do after my nephew was diagnosed with it. He's okay now, but they tell me that as long as you didn't touch it or it wasn't in the open air around you for long, you'd be okay."

What other deviousness can we suggest?

If she files complaint with paypal and win,she will have to return the item and pay for the return shipping herself.

(priority bag).

You sent clothing in a priority bag? The only thing keeping me from believing your buyer is the fact it took 10 days for her to contact you. Otherwise I would say it probably happened. If for any reason, the envelope got wet, ie; rain, condensation, I could see the ink on the envelope leaking onto the clothing causing a stain.

I would have told to to wash it and see what happens.

I think those bags do bleed when they get wet - try it with one and see what happens. What kind of money are you talking about anyway?
If she sells then she can send you a photo of the damage - right?
If it doesn't match what you sent and she didn't purchase insurance - well that would be her bad luck. Paypal would agree with you if it was damaged in shipping.

I wrap all of the books and clothing items I sell with the big roll of plastic wrap you buy at costco. Just a little bit of extra protection. Plus it looks nice.

hobbyist455:

Ralphie & I have had 2 or 3 or these spankys over the years, & he sends them his STANDARD AH CORRESPONDENCE:

"Dear Poopy-Breath:
Sorry you have experienced a problem with your purchase.

Please return to me ASAP -- be sure to use a shipping method that allows you to TRACK the package, such as UPS...

Once we receive it, and after we have validated our security features incorporated in the item, we will immediately REFUND your purchase price PLUS shipping BOTH ways...

PLEASE NOTE: items returned to us for REFUND which do NOT pass our security validation are referred to appropriate LEA for investigation and/or prosecution.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR PURCHASE & PATIENCE!

Sincerely,
Ralph J. Daug"

NOBODY ever replies, nor do they EVER send anything back!

What is "LEA"? (for investigation and/or prosecution.)

Thanks,

legal enforcement agency.
This means nothing, all they have to do is to file complaint with Paypal and it will be up to Paypal to decide, not the seller or the buyer.
If the seller uses USPS priority envelope and the stain comes from the envelope, then the seller is being negligent.

About packing:

I seal everything I ship in sturdy, clear plastic bags and the invoice facing OUT with the address-to-customer visible, before surrounding them in popcorn, bubble wrap or other 'cushioning' material. Then I seal all corners of the box with clear tape to prevent any leakage, should the item get wet unroute. And considering ANY season, the likelihood of the box getting soaked is pretty high...

(The clear bags, in various sizes, I get through my favorite local restaurant. They use them for To-Go orders and they work perfectly for my smaller-sized categories.)

I count my lucky stars! I've never had a complaint about packing or damage. (I have, however, logged a few complaints due to poor packing and damage. It's a heart-breaker when a rare item arrives in the mail in a USPS envelope, shattered!)

If the envelope isn't suitable for mailing then the post office shouldn't make them! I don't think it hobbyist's fault if the item got wet!!! She was mailing a child's shirt not a priceless collectible.
Besides the buyer may just be making it all up to get some money back.

Stick to your policy of no returns.

If you do decide to accept the return, she pays return postage, and no refund on the original shipping.

Some sellers also charge a hefty "restocking" fee.

Ladyjewels,
USPS designs different envelopes, boxes and tubes for mailing, this does not mean we should put a rock in an envelope or a freshly slaughtered chicken in a box just because the size fits .
There is something to learn from the mail order catalog house on how they pack and ship.

Another reason to mark items with a special "black light" marker. When you tell customers like this you'll offer a full refund when you receive the item back and verify it was the same item you sent, you'll probably never hear from them again. This has happened to me several times and I've yet to have someone return the item.

OTOH: Ralphie may be ugly, but at least there's ONE thing I can say in his favor:

"At least he ain't a...USED CAR SALESMAN!"
