I recently bought some electronic computer parts on ebay. They were trying to sell me insurance or some kind of a 3 year warranty with my purchase which I refused. I even got a follow up email asking if I want it. First time I've seen this.

Then I was looking for some computer memory to upgrade a friend's machine. Again, with this insurance/warranty business through Square Trade.

Anyone know anything about this?

I would approach any scheme such as this with extreme caution. On second thought, if Square Trade is involved, I wouldn't approach it at all. I'd turn around and run the opposite direction.
