Hi there,
I have a friend that would like to have a web site not on Ebay. Long story, but for some of her items, she would have more freedom of style, etc., with what she is working on developing. Anyway would like some ideas of good hosting sites(not free hosting) and what hosting companies to defiantly stay away from. For some of the items that she is developing, Ebay would not bring in a price for what those items are worth.

You can start right here. Vendio offers web hosting. From what I can gather from a few users, the price is reasonable and it's very reliable.

Do you want the best? Or do you want the cheapest? HUGE difference.

Cheapest website hosting packages start at free (you pay for it in inflated domain registration fees) to thousands of dollars a year. The most secure are Apache-based servers.

Before she starts designing she might want to learn about Search Engine Optimization (or SEO) - the key to attracting eyeballs and business to any website. It's important to be on the first three pages of search results in the major search engines such as Google, Yahoo, and MSN.

My question is -if everyone is on the first page, who is on the second, third, fourth etc page??

GoDaddy is the best, IMO. You can get hosting now for $6.95/mo. Customer services is top notch, too.

We use Hostway - not the cheapest, but very reliable and they have a full suite of services - and I think they're something like #4-5 in size. I can also attest to their customer service, but then again, we also hired a designer to work the site up for us.

These are a few of the hosting companies I've tried over the last few years:

Hypermart- Reliable hosting, 99.9% up time. I've used them for going on five years now and still have one site hosted with them. http://www.hypermart.com/hypermart/index.bml

Sashbox- Great customer service. 99.9% up time. You can have either an OsCommerce shopping cart or Zen Cart installed when you sign up. I've currently got three sites hosted with them. http://www.sashbox.com/

Dreamhost - Pretty decent hosting site. Good prices, usually offer specials. 99.9% up time. Good customer service. I put a site up with them and virtually forgot it for a year. lol It was an html ecommerce site with a mals-e free shopping cart. It got a decent amount of traffic and a few orders. Only reason I left was to change the site over to a Zen Cart. http://www.Dreamhost.com/

Chainreactionweb - Pretty good customer service and prices. 99.5% up time. Your choice of shopping carts installed: OsCommerce, Zen Cart or C.R.E. Loaded. http://www.chainreactionweb.com/info/hosting/shared.php

GoDaddy - Inexpensive basic package, cheap domain registering. I have two domains registered through them right now. I can't put my finger on it, but I just personally didn't like using them for hosting. Many others really do though....so they are worth considering. http://www.godaddy.com/gdshop/default.asp

Like I said, these are just the ones I've had a good experience with and I would personally recommend.

Thank you for your suggestions. I do have my domain with GoDaddy and have for a few years now. I like them for the domain, just wasn't sure of their hosting services. I will have her look into some of these sites.

Also she would like me to put up her site for her, and maintain it. She is looking a a fairly simple design, and maybe add a few things once or twice a month. I can do that without spending very much time.

She wanted to know how much I would charge, but I am not sure about that. Any ideas on what a fair price would be for a small site, and once or twice a month makeing a few changes? Any idea where I might find some basic fee structures for designing and maintaining sites?

Have been asked before, but don't know how much designers charges. At least she is going to work her Ebay herself, I have enough trouble getting my own stuff up on Ebay. Just put off listing as often as I should.

I have GoDaddy hosting a web site. You can check it out: http://www.cfitonline.org. It's never gone down and I'm quite pleased with its ease of use.

There are several website designers advertising on Yahoo shopping, you can check out what they charge.
'a few changes per month' thats where the squabbles start,if you dont want to be a professional designer, show her how to do it herself.

go daddy. tried nsol, long horrible story although they started out great. hostways, very slow to respond customer service, hard to get as much done online as i can with godaddy and NO customer service phone number clearly posted, as there is for godaddy. hostways also insisted for almost a year that i had a domain registered with them that i had actually moved to godaddy eons ago. multiple e'mails to clear up a problem that was on their end.
