Just curious - how come so many mention the mavica for ebay. Why does that seem to be the camera of choice for ebay listings? What's different about it?
Thanks

It's the only camera I've used for ebay so I can't really make comparisons.
I have 2 and I love using them. They make great pictures and are really easy to use. You hardly even need a manual.

I also have 2 because I purchased the second one for when the first one quits. The first one is still working after aprox. 35,000 pictures. Only problem I have had is when I purchased a new computer this year I had to look around to find one with a 3.5" disc drive. They are the simpliest camera and no software needed.

I have used the mavica for about 5 years...loaded about 100-150 (dozen discettes)...each time. The closeups were great. Same with resolutions.
Switched to the KODAK Z740 (gift)..biggest set back is DOWNSIZING the photos...even at 1.0MP..too big for ebay. So you have to downsize each photo. But, Can do 100s of photos at a time WITHOUT switching discs.
The camera you use, really depends on what you are comfortable with. Time envolved plays a factor, cables, memory cards, discs...

Simple operation, large display, large body (comfortable to hold), great macro, cheap media (floppys), manual or auto focus, shoots at 640x480, rechargable battery or run by 110 volt thru charger. There are probably more good reasons, but I can't come up with them right now.
Drawbacks---
If it's your only camera, some of the pluses for eBay use are drawbacks for everyday use. Low pixel count compared to other cameras, large size to carry around with you, newer computers don't have floppy drive, low image storage capacity (unless you have the memory stick adapter)

This is a no brainer. It is easy. No stupid downloads to do. All you do is point and shoot. Take the floppy out and put it in your computer and the picture is ready to use. No lengthy downloading afterwards. No having to think about how to download. And easily the fastest to get your photos from your camera to your computer.

I use a Olympus C-765 Ultra Zoom and just love it. It was a Consumer Reports best buy when I bought it. It is super easy to use, has superb high quality picture quality and for me the 10x optical zoom was a must for extreme closeups. I can't say enough good things about it and have never had one bad thing to say about it.

edit: Oops, typed the camera model number wrong.

I'm still using my Mavica 73, after 8 years! No problems yet. The closeups are wonderful, and the disk is sooo easy to use. I suppose if it ever does die, I'll look at Mike's Olympus. MUST have closeup capability, though, which not every camera can do well. LOVE my Mavica.

phase out the floppy disk ? Hope not...

I always got mine at Walmart but when I went to get some recently the didn't have the ones
I use to buy..I bought some that are Memorex
2SHD 1.44 MB formated and the wont let me get a photo. It displays error mssage. Any advice???

phawthorne1 only time that happened to me with my Mavica I put the floppy into my PC and reformatted it again. it worked but don't know if that will help You can also format the disk in the camera might try that.

I use my Mavica plus a kodak camera. I find it faster with the kodak to load to the pc but you just can't beat the ease of use of the Mavica plus the extreme closeups it does take. Plus my Mavica takes fast pictures unlike the kodak at times it does not seem to take them as fast. Speed is not what I am talking about but the lag of the shutter or what ever it is. I know if I move my kodak too fast after hitting shutter my picture will be blurry. Anyone else find this with some digital cameras?
I have used my Mavica exclusively until this past 6-7 months but still use both. Had the Mavica since probably 1999 or 8 and am dreading day it dies. Will probably go ebaying for another one just to have 2 options. I am in market for a super nice digital camera but am just waiting until I find that perfect LOL camera.

roadsmith - Super high quality closeup picture quality is one of the main reasons I bought the Olympus. The 10x optical zoom is great. It has a super macro setting that I often use. Below are two pictures of a 2c postage stamp. The pictures were taken with the camera lens 1 inch from the stamp and in super macro mode (preset settings). I had to crop the image because in super macro mode the stamp would cover about 4 screens to view the whole thing but it should give you a idea of what it is capable of without making you scroll the page from side to side. It was done with the factory macro settings and no special lighting, just ploped a stamp on the table and clicked a quick shot. Much higher quality images are capable if you take time and manualy adjust light, shutter speed and other settings but I find the factory settings usually work fine for me.

Here's one listed on ebay. It has a good description and list of it's features to give you a idea of what it is capable of. Olympus also makes Telephoto, Wide angle and other lens and filter packs for the camera.

Mike
I have the predecessor to your C765. My C750 was purchased to take the place of my Mavica. I've never used it for eBay pictures, as the Mavica hasn't quit yet. I do use it for all other pictures however, and am not real happy with it. It's much more complicated to use, and I've blown several pictures because of lag time. Yes, I did use the "sport mode".

The people at our Office Max said floppys are kind of a thing of the past with memory sticks and all. they only carry one brand of floppys now.I love my mavia too it just so simple. The computor geeks in the family think I am nuts putting a floppy in but your right it is so simple to use.

I've been using mine I believe for 8 years now. I've taken tens of thousands of pictures, great quality, easy to use. Now, floppy discs are not really used very much (the only thing I use them for anymore is my camera) and I see no need to change anytime soon for ebay. I did buy a new battery a couple of years ago because mine wasn't keeping a charge after so much use, but that was like a $30 purchase. I paid big $$ back in the 90's, but I certainly got my money's worth.

Oh Woe is me.......
What to do with out my floppys.lol The only brain storm I have had (thats dangerous)lol
is to not name my photos on the floppy and name them by number in a file so I can delete
and reuse my floppy....I know they say you don't get as good of a quality like that, but
guess you do what you have to do.....

IRKED.......can you tell me how you reformat on PC../ Camera ? Thanks for your info

I name my photos, upload them and then delete them all the time to reuse the floppy?
I never had any problems doing that - do you?

Lady
I do that too, but after while the floppy seems to have less capacity. That's when I format the disc to restore full capacity.

Phawthorne1...Deleting the pictures from a floppy does not get rid of them. The delete command only deletes the first letter in each filename so it appears the disk is empty when tou look at it on the PC. Subsequent recording merely overwrites the old files on the disk. Recording from one machine (Mavica) and deleting on another (PC) can further complicate things. That's what causes the decrease in capacity that Max mentioned, because the disk was full to begin with. By far, the best method is to reformat that disk after every other use. That will completely clean it off in addition to writing out any bad sectors on the disk, which can be extremely important when dealing with images.

To format in mavica put the floppy in turn on camera, find menue there should be disk tools. choose that another box says bottom up cancel/diskcopy/format highlight format and another box appears asking to confirm clik yes and it will format disk for the camera.

I don't know if a new PC or a new disk type has anything to do with it but maybe the new floppy is formatted in NTFS?? or something of like I don't know if that would have anything to do with it or not my PC is still Fat 32 not sure what the camera formats it to but ntfs might not be compatible with camera but fat 32 ok with ntfs? NOT sure of this just a thought?? Anyway use camera to format a disk and see if it lets you take pictures etc .

YES you should format the disk if it has been used much with either your PC or your camera to get rid of left over bits taking up space plus it makes for better or less errors showing up. I have in past had to trash disk that were not useable in my mavica probably from too much use or corruption that is not fixable in format. New disks should not have that problem did you reformat and find it worked let us know.

less than 1/8" from lens
also less than 1/8" from lens.
Both of these are labels on bottom of parfum bottles that you can not read with naked eye, or lat least I can't. first label is .5" maybe square and the one on pink background is only .25 or less high label definately can't read that one without jewelers loop or very good magnifying glass. Maybe an eagle eye can read them but not me even with my glasses.

Good thing about my mavica I don't have to reduce the image, and it does great closeups for at least what I need.

Boy this is some great stuff!!! All these years I've been doing it wrong (or not complete}. I just picked out some of my clean floppy and formatted them - they were 1/4 full. I bet that's why my images were being "eaten".

Lady sometimes you will just have a really bad disc that won't even be helped with formatting, I have had 3 in my 9 years computing that I just had to trash they had bad spots that would cause all sorts of havoc on the pc or the camera. Hey I even take old disk that came with programs for install and format those boogers and they work great cause they have only had one go around on them with written information on them. Look at garage sales for floppy stuff, great way to get them cheap and not have to worry about finding new ones. I have about 300 plus flopies and have used only about 50 of them for camera use sometimes throwing in another one or 2. So all that information I saved years ago to a floppy can be recycled and their information written to a DVD or CD to free them up.

My bro-in-law got a mavica like mine on ebay for $75 including shipping heck of a steal.

At a yard sale two years ago I bought a box of disks, about 75 of them, for a couple of dollars, to add to the disks we had around here that I'd been using. About once every 4 months I erase the disks, and every 8 months or so I reformat them. You know when they need reformatting, as the number of photos on each disk decreases.

But I've never checked to see if I can reformat them right on the Mavica 73! That would be even easier, probably.

Just got the word that Sears Outlet Stores are closing out Mavicas at $98.00. If you have one in your area, might not hurt to take a look.
